Hi,It would happen if both M.2 slots are routed directly to CPU. x299 chipset has 24 lanes dedicated from the CPU while the rest (20) are for direct connection for GPU and m.2 slot. GPU @x16 + M.2 @ x4 = 20 lanes which is all a 44 lane CPU has available.
Then we have scenarios where the CPU has only 28 lanes. Then some of the lanes are shared between direct connection and the chipset.
This is a very complex topic and needs to be reviewed per use case. Both MB design and CPU total lanes matter.
Thanks here's my x299 mark 2 layout
Single gpu.
M.2's are listed in system spec's
Hi,
Thanks I was just pointing out which m.2's I bought
Here's a link didn't have it on this machine yet one 512gb below gpu os

Get a board that has one of these or similar, to have lanes out the wazoo: PCI Express Switches
Hi,
I was eyeballing a x299 omega but blew that off for other priorities it supposedly had 4 maybe five m.2 slots
Might of gotten it but prime day was not cooperating price wise on the omega it did not drop and actually went up a little 484.00 to 505.00 or something
No biggie
M.2's and a "not mentioned yet" item was a better buy atm
Hi,
Thanks didn't see anything about or not much about m.2 on x99 bios
But I'll look on x299 and see what it shows
I install the m.2 and still use a sata 2.5" ssd and create a partition on the m.2
Then make a new winpe recovery cd.. and boot to it with the 2.5" ssd removed
Restore system image to the m.2
Had to use 10 iso media and run startup repair otherwise I got inaccessible boot device on startup.
Works good now haven't done x299 yet.
