Intel - Core i7-9700K motherboard compatibility

Hi all, looking to upgrade my build to an Intel - Core i7-9700K 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor but basically every motherboard I plop into pcpartpicker seems to give me this error

• Some Intel B360/H310/Z370 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Coffee Lake Refresh CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.

Not really sure what to do or what motherboard to choose. I don't really want to spend a lot of money or do anything fancy, just something that works with my CPU is all I need. Even when I pick motherboards that pcpartpicker says are compatible, I get this message. I'm scared of buying the wrong one and destroying my parts lol. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

well to be honest, if you dont want to spend alot of money or do anything fancy, why spend so much on a cpu when you could buy an i5 Intel BX80684I58600K 8th Gen Core i5-8600K Processor: Amazon.co.uk: Computers Accessories and motherboard for the same cost as the i7 CPU?

however, this is your choice and I understand sometimes need overtakes requirement

When I click on the compatible motherboards and select at random Asus ROG Strix Z370-I Gaming there are no warnings as you state in the original Post!

I would suggest pick a motherboard and go to the vendor website direct and check CPU compatibility
You will also get the correct memory specifications from here.
Also, buy on amazon and you can return !!!

By do anything fancy I meant I probably don't plan on overclocking or anything beyond using a custom build or special cooling, I just want higher than the rubbishy 30fps on med-low settings I'm getting while gaming at the moment I will be getting a newer GPU as well as both my CPU & GPU are at 100% when playing new AAA titles. I was thinking of going slightly overboard with a CPU so that I can keep it for a long time.

I'm browsing from overclockers.co.uk at the moment as they seem to have the best prices but that board is slightly out of my price range (and out of stock), I didn't really want to spend more than £100-150 on a motherboard..I'm have no preference for brand or anything at all for mobos so I really have no clue how to decide other than price lol.

You got no warnings for that one? For example I chose the Gigabyte Z370P D3 which is the same chipset but it gave me that warning. I don't understand what about these two motherboards would be different so that it'd give me this issue. Perhaps if I better understood I'd be able to choose a motherboard that is within my price range and is compatible?

The difference is a BIOS update, thats all, but this may need to be done before you add the new CPU.

If this is more of a gaming Pc, then the extra money needs to be spent on a decent GPU.
If you check out the i5, it is more the average gamers choice then money can be save and spent on the GPU

Shop around and do some serious investigation before you spend, you eally can save huge amounts bycutting back a little on the CPU and motherboard.

A decent graphics card can easily knock you back around £350 to £600

What about top end motherboards that are compatible with i7-9700k cpu?

I built a new general purpose PC in December, based on Asus Z390-A motherboard and i7-7700K. Caveate: it can't install Windows 7, so I was forced to migrate to Windows 10 Pro, which is a problematic and meddling O/S, but Windows aside, the motherboard runs really well, cool and fast. I have M.2 boot drive and from a power on, it's at the login screen in four seconds.
It runs video editing smoothly for up to 4K 24P, and Maya runs very nicely too. I don't run games, but I reckon that would run well. I put a MSI GTX1060 in because this is my 'backup' NLE and serves mainly as internet and office/word/excel PC. Otherwise, I'd spring for something much more capable. I didn't build it to run heavy graphics, but surprisingly, it does quite well. So I am pleased with the Asus Z390-A.

One word of caution: if you update the BIOS, it will revert to on board graphics and you will need a displayport monitor to see your BIOS settings. Also, if you don't have it set for legacy storage, it won't see the M.2 drive and will revert to on board graphics, which I find rather odd, but that's what I learned after six hours of troubleshooting a black screen after BIOS update. The trick is update BIOS before you do anything else, and have the appropriate device to plug in. Outside of that, it's a great motherboard.
