You might want to check the Portatech web site -- Computers Made Easy. They sell most of the newer AMD and Intel CPU's with "guaranteed compatible" mother boards, memory etc.
Pre-assembled and tested has appeal so I took a look. They have a good selection of CPUs but a pretty limited number of boards. The list drops way down for any given form factor ... and I'm interested only in ATX.

I think I'll risk selecting and assembling the parts myself. I've pretty much decided on
    • ASUS Prime H370-Plus
    • Intel i5-8400
    • Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR4 2133 MT/s

My only worry is that one web site (and only one so far) listed the ASUS Prime H370-Plus as having a form factor mATX rather than ATX. I'm not going to order anything until I get the form factor confirmed.

How about the word about the board directly from ASUS:
    PRIME H370-PLUS | Motherboards | ASUS USA

ASUS Prime H370-Plus LGA1151 (300 Series) DDR4 HDMI DVI VGA M.2 ATX Motherboard

I think some ads aren't always well-viewed, there is the possibility the M.2 part of the description may be confusing, to me that is a slot/socket on the motherboard for the new type SSD.
