    Migrating from HDD to SSD


    Not sure whether this is the correct forum for my questions.

    I would like to migrate my primary HDD to SSD and reuse the drive for additional storage .

    Here is the current disk partition on Drive #1
    System reserved: 34MB/100MB
    C: 45.38GB/101.92GB
    D: 15.35GB/78.13GB
    E : 10.59GB/97.66GB
    F: 0/94.81GB

    I can move the E drive contents to another physical drive . This means I probably would need only a 100GB SSD with room to spare.

    Should I delete partitions E &F before cloning to the SSD?

    You don't say what software you're cloning with but, for example, with Macrium Reflect (Free or Paid), you can selectively clone (or image and restore) only the partitions you need to and want to by using a drag and drop interface. So, again depending on your software, I would say no you don't necessarily have to delete partitions E & F.

    You're looking at just under 75GB of data to migrate from your HDD to SSD so...
    I'd suggest you use Todo Backup Free for migrations to SSDs. As "Word Man" mentioned, you get to choose if you want to move some or all of the partitions of a disk. I think you'll be ok to just migrate/clone the whole disk to the new SSD and then from it from the SSD to the other physical drive you mentioned having. If you have a Samsung SSD, use their Samsung Magician software to do the clone.

    I will be using Macrium Free s/w to clone. Thinking of using Crucial MX500 SSD

    Can I clone the whole 375Gb into a 250GB SSD ? What will happen to partition E and F ?

    Do I also need to clone the "system reservation " besides C&D partitions? Tks

    Macrium can clone the entire disk and will shrink the C:\ partition to fit the new drive when restoring them all to the new disk. I had to do that on one of my PC's.

    If you.clone or restore an image you only have to be concerned with actual data not empty space. So with Macruim, you would shrink the correct partition to fit the new SSD, there are many Videos on YouTube that walk you through step by step. And if your system is UEFI/GPT I would clone all partitions. If you have DATA partitions that have no data then you don't need to clone them all system partitions do need to be cloned in order for your SSD to boot after the clone.
