I have made the decision to delid my i7 8700k due to high temps.

    Hi,
We don't need no sticking warranty lol
If it dies we just go thread ripper next time around instead of Intel pigeon poop line up

Glad to see this issue got fixed. For easy reference, you shouldn't be getting high temps like that even with a lidded i7 8700k with air cooling - especially not an AIO water cooler. Maybe more so when lidded if you overclock to 4.9-5.1ghz. I've personally never gone over 4.8ghz 6 cores with my lidded 8700k air cooling with reasonable temps (not like shown here). Yes, the CPU can run very hot, especially when overclocked, but don't jump straight to delidding if you're not comfortable with it, it could very well be a problem with the cooler. Regardless of what cooler you have, delidding is worth it if you're willing to remove your warranty and risk damaging the CPU, but depending on your needs/expectations, it's not necessary for all consumers.
Yeah, I should have known it was the cooler playing up really however I was thinking of delidding at some point anyway and it's an OEM cpu with a short warranty compared to retail so I figured I would go for it. It was fun doing it and with the delid tool very easy.

Speak for yourself, Mike. If mine dies it will be another Intel.

My Delided temps with a Water 3.0 360 4.9 Ghz i took it down from 5ghz no need to push it mem @3500mhz

I have made the decision to delid my i7 8700k due to high temps.-delid.png

Max at 100% 80c -83c I have one core i brought down to 4.6 Ghz to compensate for the heat

because that one core can touch 90c easily

While I understand not every core is identical and are in different locations on the die, if your temps are varying that much on a per core basis ESPECIALLY with water cooling, that's what I've heard and seen with poor thermal paste application. It's usually caused making proper contact with the processor die. This happens if the retention bracket and or heatsink isn't properly attached to the motherboard, but usually when thermal paste isn't facilitating contact as intended. This can either have to do with spread or air bubbles. If you haven't, you need to check that nothing is loose and the paste is working properly. I've also heard that not only can paste get "old" over time, but some specific shipments are either mishandled or manufactured improperly and that causes them to not function correctly, even with proper application.

Tommy, what are you running when you get those temps? I wouldn't think a properly delidded chip should get that hot, or your CPU block isn't seated/pasted right.

It's fine my max temps at 100% pretty much stick at 82c with that one core being reduced to 4.6 ghz and belive me the cooler is seated properly and using noctua paste

All my max temps on other cores max out at 72c and i think the paste still needs cure time i would think it's only been 24 hours

I didn't answer you specifically about that but i was benchmarking when i did it cinebench and some performance programs that's why i am saying it is fine it maxs out at those temps when at 100%

    Hi,
I believe Steve said on his board cpu vid support caused cpu voltage spikes maybe it's doing the same on yours ?
