I don't think there will be anything released very soon that will be significantly faster than the 8700K. There's talk of that 8 core Intel chip coming soon as a Coffelake refresh but I have some doubt's whether Intel are able to clock an 8 core as high as the 6 core 8700K...

What are the rumors on 10nm lately? Release date, potential chips etc? Someone told me that they'd rather wait for 10nm to mature before looking at high end desktop 10nm chip but I don't understand the full story. How often do you upgrade? If your already upgrading from Skylake then quite regularly? You could wait to see what Intel drop this year but I don't know how long you'll be waiting for 10nm.

All I can say is the 8700K is amazing and if your itching I'd probably go with it. Again I don't think the'll be anything significant compared to the 8700K any time too soon but I'll let some other users chime in who may be a bit more up on the Intel play... :)

Honestly, if you don't need to, just yet upgrade, I would wait, until Intel starts selling the new CPUs, that do not have that Spectre problem, it could take a while, but Coffee lake has the bug too.

Thanks Cliff. Not having the Spectre problem would be a bonus. I am in no hurry atm, just mentally thinking about it and early research. PC is working fine atm.

My current plan is to replace the motherboard and cpu (I assume the ram is compatible) and put the old skylake on my older pc.

I just syncd copies of all my BIOS settings to one drive so I can just go down the list with my laptop after the flash this time.
