Curious about the difference beteen G5 mbps and the 2.4 mbps network

On one PC I get on the G5, 75 mbps download and 8.6 mbps on the upload and ping 114 ms (speed test)
On the other PC with 2.4 mbps I get on average 16.8 download and 4.6 upload and ping 21 ms (speed test)
Yet the speed between the 2 PC's does not seem to be that much different when browsing.
Furthermore, I tried to get the second PC also on the G5 but for some reason the G5 does not come up on the network list.
I was told that being on the G5 you get less interference using Wi-Fi.
Both PC's have the windows 10 OS.
I did reset the modem and I reset the network, but it did not make the G5 come up on the network list of the second PC, whereas before I changed mine to the G5 from the 2.4 you could see that both were visible on the both PC's network list.

A WiFi adapter will only see the 5GHz signal if it is capable of using that waveband.

• Of my three computers, two [with fairly new 808.11ac standard dual-band WiFi adapters] can see both my 2.4GHz & 5GHz networks but a computer with an older 801.11n standard WiFi adapter can only see the 2.4GHz signal.
• You would have to check the specs for your WiFi adapters to find out what they can cope with.

Having spent money on a faster network connection, a faster router & those two faster WiFi cards I am often able to persuade myself that I can see the faster responses on two of the computers compared to the older one. If I had not spent any money I would probably just regard the difference as noticeable only during large downloads.

You will not notice any browsing difference with your fairly fast speeds. The difference will be when you download things.

The 5 GHZ band will often be faster as routers use more advanced technology like MIMO.

Not all wifi cards are dual band capable.

Johannes, if you go into device manager on the unit that you can't see the 5Ghz network on you should be able to see the actually wireless adapter you are using. You can then Google and see if it is dual band.

Hi Caledon Ken, Thank you for the added info, I checked and it appears to be a dual channel 802.11n.
However, it is not imperative to have the other PC also on the G5.
We are not gamers and the reason we checked this out is, we were told that being on the G5 network would give us less interference when using the Wi-Fi.
Occasionally we had some slow connection to web sites.

The 2.4Ghz band has eleven channels in North America, its established so lots of users and does a better job at distance. (Most printer / scanners on 2.4)

The 5 Ghz has more unique channels and as it does not do as well at distance there may be less interference, house to house.

There are several tools and a command in Windows that you can use to "See" the channels in use.

Netsh wlan show all | clip
(produces report on wireless. Once output is produced the | clip portion of command places it on clipboard, ready to be pasted.)


Open Notepad and Crtl + V to paste. Save and close text file. Then open or print text file, could be several pages.

It will show you your network and all the networks it can see and their strengths. Don't locate wireless routers beside cordless phone bases or other sources of "Noise" like transformers.

Could you post the details of your card like make and model number for the one that can't see 5Ghz. Very strange that dual band can't see 5Ghz network. Now it could be dual "G" and "N" which is different than 2.4 and 5.

I did download the program, but it is beyond my capabilities to grasp how to go about these issues.
For one, I am an old dog and two I have dyslexia which makes it difficult to follow text instructions.
I do thank you for your effort to enlighten me, see enclosed the screen shots of each PC the one with just Joe showing on the list is the other PC.

You can see from first screen shot, the high narrow Joe is your 5Ghz and it is quite strong. You can see there are not a lot of 5Ghz networks around you, so your comment less interference in this case is true.

The second screen shot does not even show the 5Ghz band so that card is likely not able to send and or receive on that band.

You see your 2.4 Ghz network and you can see all the other networks using the same channel. They are stacked underneath it as they are weaker. Yours is strong and theirs are weak. Of course this is a moment in space. If you do this in another room theirs could become stronger, you are closer to them, so could they interfere, yes. With a laptop start the tool and wander around.

The cheapest, easiest, fastest way to get a 5Ghz radio for the PC without it, buy a little USB dongle. $25-$50 dollars. Plug it in and shut off the built in one. The price varies based on quality and size of dongle. The really good smaller dongles are more expensive. The folks at your computer shop should be able to help.
