Computer appears offline everywhere while actually online

    Hi,

My sons pc appears offline to others in every game, app etc. including FB, WOT, Xbox app, Minecraft. Apps and games functions normally online, only status appears offline to other users. Many community functions require online status, so this is quite frustrating. Help appreciated.

Morning AvaruudenTarzan. Welcome to the TenForums @AvaruudenTarzan

    Did this just start recently?

Can you think back as to what changed just prior to that? (Product installs, hardware changes, router changes, Feature Updates)

Is your son's computer visible to your computer on Network (If it is using Public network setting the firewalls are set more aggressive. )

What AV product are you using? Have you checked firewall for a potential rule that is blocking ports used by game?

I assume the game has settings. Have you reviewed those?

Thank you Ken, and good afternoon!

I just yesterday build him new pc and istalled fresh win 10 pro 64 bit. He had existing MS account (phone), age 8 years. Problem started before I attached him as familymember.

No AV yet, just defender, nothing changed in settings. Problem exited from the start and everywhere i tested, from browser Facebook to independent game WOT as well as xbox app. We can send messages etc but he always appears to offline to others while on his pc everything works fine and is online.

Can't see his pc or add him to homegroup. We are in the same Network, but he is not directly attched to same adsl modem (modem - elecricity network - wifi). Other Computers using same wifi and it works normally.

I have been browsing through numerous settings but haven't found the one master switch. I might try another account and see if problem persists.

Since he is using wifi please confirm his network is set to "private".

Start > Settings > Network and internet > Wifi in left column. Then clcik on the SSID you are using. It will either open a page with the type of network or you have to click on manage.

Either he has it set to hide that he is online for whatever he is doing, or he is set to be invisible. If he is connecting to the games and no problems, then I really would not worry so much about it. The big question is how old is your son.

My son is 8 years old. I'm using windows family options to supervise and restrict web content, games and time.

Problem is, while he can connect games, he cannot form parties in minecraft or WOT because he appears offline.

How to set hide or invisible?

And yes, Ken, my networks wifi extension is set to private and it's well protected.

Okay, we are getting some terms mixed. Your Wifi has security and that security extends out to extension. You need a password to join. That has nothing to do with how the network is set on device. In either Public or Private mode your son would have to enter password/passphrase/key to wireless network to gain access.

If your son's device has the network set to public then the firewalls are set more aggressive. You said you can't see him on the network, you should be able to see all device inside the private network. (Now there are some window 10 networking issues which I assume you don't have.)

It is most likely the parental controls, which Windows sucks at. Use OpenDNS to control what the various devices can access through the choices. If he uses the same computer as the rest of the family, you do not have problems with your logon, could just be that you have his set too strict.

Ok, I have cleared the issue at most parts. I'm still not exactly sure what was wrong, but after reconfiguring Network and parental controls (severalk times) the only problem that exits is with xbox-application. I can live with that.

    Thanks for the help!
