How do you access a Win10 network from WinXP My Network Places?

The Win10 computers can see and access the XP laptop, but the XP laptop cannot see the Win10 computers in "My Network Places". This seems to be a common problem with no workable solutions so far.

The XP computer can open an Explorer window to WIN10 computers by searching for them in the search box by name, e.g. \\Computer1.The event log shows ID 1003 (Can't renew DHCP address), 8021 (Unable to retrieve list of servers from Browser Master) and 8023 (Browser service failed to retrieve backup list), which is also common.

No comments about stop using XP please. That is not a viable alternative in this case. Thanks

Has XP got the latest service pack and has it got NetBIOS running? If from a cmd prompt you type ipconfig /all is the IP all most the same as other pcs is 192.168.1.7 ?

    Thanks for your reply.

Yes, yes and yes. And they also have the same workgroup name (I should have mentioned it was a workgroup network).

Right now there are four active computers on the network:

    1. NetBScanner shows one of the three Win10 computers as the master browser.

    2. ipconfig shows all four have NetBios=enabled.

    3. All 4 show Computer Browser=running

    4. NetBScanner shows all computers by IP and name so I assume DNS is okay working somewhere.

    5. None of the network Properties dialog boxes of the four show the NetBios protocol installed like in the old days (I assume they're not to supposed to anymore).

There's a lot of complex Technet traffic about this being broken in WIN10-1703. An example:

--> Anyone else notice the network issues with Windows 10 Creators edition? <--

I hoped that asking the question again in simple language would flush out some successful solutions. The only quick workaround I've come up with is to create a shortcut to Explorer on the Desktop that opens another computer by name or IP.

Ah, "dsnisnt" must mean "dns isn't. Yes. I ran the scanner on all four computers. I also set the XP box to force it to be the master browser.

What did you think about the example? Most of the net discussions focus on SMB, master browser or shares management.

    Hey rwhite1,
    Give this a try ...

    1. Shut down ALL the PCs
    2. Start the XP PC
    3. Once the XP PC is up and running ... start the Win10 PCs

Note: Starting the XP PC first will hopefully make it he Master Browser.

    Eagle21:

Yea, I read about that somewhere, but I haven't tried it yet. I will. Someone also said that they attached a router to the system that can be configured as a master browser worked for them. I guess that might be because a router is version independent.

    Thanks for the idea.

Yes, I you have a router that supports USB File Sharing. You can use an external USB HDD or a USB Stick and set up the File Sharing in the router, which will make your router the Master Browser. Once you set it up, you will probably have to shut down all PCS and then restart them for it to take affect.

Note: I have 3 yr old netgear router set up with USB File Sharing and it uses SMBv1, so I have to have the SMBv1 client running on all my Win 10 PCs for things to work. I do not have SMBv1 server running on any of the PCs thou.

    Note: SMBv1 is deprecated. See more about Win10 (1709/FCU) and SMBv1 ... https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...r-version-1709
