Netgear DDNS vs. a simple email?

I am researching VPN but it seems that if I am going to use VPN I should also use DDNS. I've looked at several threads here to get a better understanding of DDNS (thanks NavyLCDR for all of your contributions) and have the following question. It may seems not too relevant but the answer will help me to understand just what DDNS is doing. So here's the question: What does DDNS do for me that a simple email sent to a specified addresses when the IP address changes would not do? (The question assumes that I am the only one who would care.)

    Thanks, Bob

Nothing really. DDNS just gives you a human friendly name you can go by, instead of an IP address.
