Fix for SMBv1 and get your network devices to show up

Due to Microsoft has tied the Computer Browser service into SMB1, you lose it after unchecking in Windows Features under Programs and Features. In other words, do not touch the huge red button labeled smb1 in Windows Features, but do the following and it will disable smb1, but still allow Computer Browser service to run.

First go into Services (can enter in Run services.msc and it will come up), look for "Computer Browser" and right click to get to properties. Then change from Manual to Automatic. It will show up as Triggered when you reboot after enter the following two items into a Command Window:

To disable SMBv1 on the SMB client, run the following commands:
    sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb20/nsi
    sc.exe config mrxsmb10 start= disabled

Reboot and above all, if you have a NAS, make sure that it is not set to be Master Browser, because it will break SMB. You can use the Lan Scanner tool from Scottie's Tech to check that all workstations show up in the Workgroup/Domain and which is master. Downloads | Scotties Tech.Info I found the information to fix Microsoft's mistake when they put out to just disable smb1 from Windows Features, which finally gets rid of one huge headache, until Microsoft finds a way to break Windows 10 again. Have a good day, and you can have a drink of your favorite beverage to celebrate the victory of beating Microsoft again.

Is this supposed to be the fix for network computers not displaying from other computers?
One of my computers is invisible on the network, although I can browse to it by typing \\[Computer Name] in the address bar.

Did you read what I posted, which came from the Spiceworks link? It is the fix for what Microsoft screwed up by telling everyone to go into Programs and Features, then Windows Components and just disable SMBv1, without going "I bet that we are going to get swamped with calls from people, because we neglected to tell them that we are going to break their networking on their computer."

You have to have the Computer Browser Service running, which acts as SMBD and NMBD on Linux.

I had given up yesterday and got out a usb stick to copy a file over to the laptop. Then discovered I could use Google Drive, upload a file which could be downloaded to the laptop. I could see the shared desktop folders on the laptop. There were no network folders on the desktop. This 'sharing' is not done often so I don't know when the shared folders disappeared. I was accusing the recent update but there was also a major parts replacement done also(motherboard, cpu, power supply)
Found this thread. Laptop still had the computer browser service. Desktop had no checkmark beside SMB1 and there was no Computer Browser service- therefore no Network visible.
The laptop would not communicate. The message was that File and Print sharing was not responding.
Started looking in TenForums again today and this thread was the success.
Replaced the SMB1 feature for desktop and Network returned - files could be transferred in both directions.
Now to search out why SMB1 needs to be disabled.

SMBv1 was created at the birth of networking and it is very limited in securing. SMBv2 can be used for networks that are up to 10gbps, SMBv3 is the next even better version.

Thanks for all the research and work you put into this difficult problem. I also followed you on at least two of the other TenForums threads on this same topic.I should have a simple network but even that appears to be too complex for me to proceed. I have one laptop and one desktop. Both are running Windows 10 version 1703 with the latest build, 15063.540.Over the last week or so I may have messed up my existing Network so much that it appears unlike any other described here in these threads. I'm using the NetBScanner tool and the SoftPerfect Network Scanner tool. Screen shots below. Also below is a listing of LAN Computers from my DLink Router.

I'd like to have my desktop machine (John - PC) as the Master browser. Right now it appears that my laptop somehow has assumed this role which I don't want. I think I understand the command line editing of the SMBv1, but I do have some questions on how to actually implement the solution. First off, how can I get my machine, (John - PC) the desktop, to assume the Master server role. Once I accomplish this, does it matter which machine I should start with when editing the SMBv1, the client or server side or in this context the laptop or the desktop. And am I correct in assuming that both machines need editing of the SMBv1 settings?

Thanks again for any help you can give me. Right now I'm in over my head and I'm concerned that if I go further on my own I'll mess up the entire network.

Oh yeah, making things a bit easier, I don't have a NAS device.

It does not matter if you have a NAS or not. What matters is that you can see all computers on the network, regardless if they have shares or not.

Thanks bro67. and that's just my problem --- not seeing both my wired computers on my network. The SoftPerfect Network Scanner tool (see first screenshot above) is the only software able to see both computers.

The NetBScanner tool (see second screenshot above) shows only the laptop. This is the same as Windows File Explorer (below). This screenshot is taken from my desktop and only shows my laptop as the network.

John I am just starting to dig back into the whole SMBv1 stuff, since it is archaic and like many other elder technologies that Microsoft seems to be stuck on using, also lets not forget thousands of companies are running AS/400 on VM's, we are pretty much learning by the skin of our teeth to try and get Windows machines, along with Linux, to stop breaking the SMB protocol.
