User folders State is Shared.
I've just noticed that my Document, Download, Pictures folders are showing as State: Shared. I haven't got any Homegroup or network sharing enabled that I'm aware of so why would I be seeing this?

Hi Kol12.
I assume this means you've set these to be Shared, or said another way. if someone was able to connect then those files are accessible.
Have you checked. Right click on Documents, properties, Sharing Tab, Advance Sharing ....
Is there a check mark to Share.

Hi Caledon,
Neither the Doc, Download or Picture folders have sharing tabs in properties just security tabs. Now that I think of it I'm running from a standard user account but I frequently access these (my) folders from the administrator account. I'm guessing these folders would have initially needed admin privileges granted to them and that's how they became shared?

As the administrator you should be able to navigate to these folders on your standard account. You should then be able to right click. I would think you would then see Sharing tab.
In any event, if you access these folders from your admin account then indeed they are being shared so windows is showing the correct status.
I know the first thought in everyone's mind today, who has access to my data? It's good we think like that, wish security was tighter so we didn't have to think like that.

Hi Ken,
The Docs, Pics, Downloads folders in my standard account definitely don't have sharing tabs in their properties. This standard account is the account I use the most and I only ever pop over to the admin account to run admin related tasks and install new programs. Also as mentioned I access the above folders from the admin account occasionally which is likely why they have become shared. I'm not sure why these folders don't have sharing tabs but I will check if they appear in the admin account instead.
Ha yeah, luckily only I use my computer and I like to think I run a pretty tight ship!

You do.
I try to convince my customers to run as Standard and then just enter Admin password if needed. No dice, to awkward. So they continue as admin and continue to do things they shouldn't. Helps to keep me busy.

People I've spoken to also find it to much trouble, the security benefits I feel greatly outweigh the inconvenience of having to enter an admin password every so often...

The shared status icon only appears when the folder is actually shared on the network. It does not appear when only multiple users of the same computer have access to the folder. You don't need a homegroup for a folder to be shared.

Please post results of get-smbshare in powershell. Then you can see for sure what folders are shared.
These are the defaults with the exception of downloads folder which I shared explicitly.
If you have ever shared anything in C:\Users then C:\Users remains shared.Code:PS C:\Windows\system32> get-smbshare Name ScopeName Path Description ---- --------- ---- ----------- ADMIN$ * C:\Windows Remote Admin C$ * C:\ Default share Downloads * C:\Users\Hali\Downloads IPC$ * Remote IPC Users * C:\Users PS C:\Windows\system32>
This quote applies to windows 10 also..The C:\Users folder is shared when any sub folders from C:\Users\\ is sharedWhen a C:\Users\<username>\<folder> subfolder is shared using the shell UI, the C:\Users folder and its contents are shared as well. Additionally, when sharing is revoked on C:\Users\<username>\<folder>, the C:\Users folder remains shared
