Shared drive Explorer window popping up every 20 minutes

I shared two drives on my PC so I could play my media on my Raspberry Pi KODI box and one drive opens an Explorer window every 20 minutes on my PC.

One drive I shared was F: which is a partition on an internal SATA drive, it never opens a window.
The other was J: an external USB drive.

The external drive opens an Explorer window showing its contents every 20 minutes.
I first noticed it at 5:20 and at 6:20 but now I see it opens 3 times per hour.

Does anyone know why it's doing it and how I can stop it from opening a window every 20 minutes?

Hi Khun moo Curt. Welcome to the TenForums @Khun moo Curt.

If you shut down your Raspberry Pi does Explorer still open every 20 minutes?

You can determine if this a schedule task. Right after you see Explorer run this command

    schtasks /query /FO TABLE /v |clip

as outlined in this article, "Follow this General Troubling Shooting Advice".
(You have to scroll down to find this section.)
(please don't load any kind of driver update tool.)

You should be able to match time of explorer with a time in report.

You might also want to use Autoruns (part of sysinternals) to see if you can identify.

The clean boot process can also help identify root cause.

Thanks for the info. I ran the command and pasted the results into notepad three times, the last two times I did it right after the window opened itself up.

I searched for today's date in the Last Run Time column and looked at the time but I found nothing in the report that matched up with the times the window opened.
Not only does it open the window, it makes it the active window btw.

I unplugged my Kodi box and was very surprised that the window of the shared drive kept popping up every 20 minutes.
I'd assumed that the PC was responding to some refresh or scan from the Kodi box, but it's not.

I noticed the window that pops up is the share where I shared the entire drive, the other share that never has popped up a window is just a folder on a drive.

I turned off sharing of the drive and was going to try one at a time adding just a folder on that drive but when I tried, the folders I'd unshared, shared themselves again.

Right now the drive isn't shared but the 5 folders on it are.

Under "share with" I have 4 options, Stop Sharing, Create or Join a Homegroup, KODI and Specific people.
I just tried selecting KODI for the 5 folders to see what that does.

Still, no idea why the Explorer window of this drive keeps opening.

I'll try the clean boot option.

I did a clean boot. disabled all the (non Microsoft) services and all the startups and the problem when away.
I enabled half the services, rebooted, still no problem, I enabled the rest of the services, still no problem.
I enabled half the startups, rebooted, still no problem, enabled the rest of the startups, still no problem.
Changed from selective startup to normal startup, rebooted. Problem back. Explorer window pops up after 20 minutes.

What's the difference between normal startup and selective startup with all the services and startups enabled?

Sorry I can't answer that to the detail required. When looking at panels Normal loads all drivers and services.

What I could suggest is start in both modes and take screen prints of services started. The audit the two.

Again Autoruns will likely provide same info only in a different view and there is lots of detail.

I would go with the screen print method of services to narrow field down.
