Oh wait, Karen. I noticed that the line you propose begins with #

The # tells the parser to ignore the line so you will want

    192.168.1.16 SuperComputer

your file should look something like this
    # Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
    ## This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    ## This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    ## Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    ## For example:
    ## 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    # localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.# 127.0.0.1 localhost# ::1 localhost

    192.168.1.16 SuperComputer

OK... I went and changed that...removed the #

(I moved the hosts document to desktop... made the changes
and saved it ...then moved it back to etc. I couldn't find any
other way to do that... kept refusing to let me save it to etc.)

    And YIPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

    It WORKED...

thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!!

this has been making me nuts for months

I'm ever so grateful for your help.

Hi Karen. If you get this fixed I hope you will either post the fix or mark a response as being the fix. I have been chasing this problem for a week now. I won't say that I've tried everything since I clearly haven't tried the thing that fixes it. I'm beginning to think my problem is with the Win10 Creator Update (1703) and I just recently noticed it because I don't open the Network folder very often.
    Howard.... it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Karen, remember what I said about static IP. DHCP is the default setting for all connections in home systems -- in Windows, Linux, Mac. Unless someone set up static IPs for your computers, then you might run into trouble down the line when DHCP changes the IP of SuperComputer. At this time, your hosts setting will very likely break your connections.

It is quite easy to set up a static IP. A Google search will give you easy-to-follow tutorials.

That's great news Karen. I appreciate you taking the time to update me.

I'll give this a try tomorrow.

Best regards to you and hymanwallace.
