Ken, found the full / half duplex but made no difference, laptop not all the same settings as it's a Broadcom Netlink not as the pc which I have two one on motherboard, Intel, the other is a csl pcie card which is realtec. I got the csl to try and see if it was a motherboard fault but get the same speeds from both.

Just so we know, which OS is installed on the Laptop and Desktop.

    The NIC's on desktop are rated as ...... (100Mbps or 1000Mbps) ?

    Same question for laptop.

Is it correct to say you are using the same Lan cable to perform both tests?

Is it also safe to say when you test, your LAN cable from your desktop to your router is in clean air, basically it is not lying on, or threaded through the mess of cables behind your desktop. Your desktop could be different than mine but I have plenty of power cables and transformers amassed behind and around mine. This will just ensure you are not getting interference from your line voltages or transformers.

When you run test could you try disabling firewall and AV's (if more than one) on desktop and reruning test.

Laptop and pc both windows 10 (64bit) . The cable is near other cables but I have tried in clean air with no difference. I will try disabling firewall and AV's and let you know. NIC's rated as 1000Mbps. And yes using the same cable which I take out of the pc and plug into the laptop.

A strange thing is if I unplug it from the pc motherboard, then into the adapter card ( the one I bought to see if the motherboard was at fault ) I get a high reading, the plug into the motherboard connection I also get a high reading 33Mbps aprrox, then it get less and less as I test it a few times, down to 16.37 approx.

Would be interesting to see if you get same results with a clean boot. This would isolate all software on your device thereby either pointing finger at OS or third party. If you try this I would have bootable media on hand and I would take an Image to be sure you can get back to where you are now.

You might even try the test with Ubuntu. Don't install, just run from CD so it doesn't mess with boot records. Would still be good idea to have Image (Macrium Reflect software, tutorial within forum library.)

You said if you test repeatedly. Once it slows downs, if you let it sit for say thirty minutes, and then retest does it reset to fast or get even slower.

Have you tried using and older driver for your motherboard NIC, not one that Windows thinks you need?

Thanks for your reply. I tried with bitdefender and malwarebytes off but same results. I shall now try your other suggestions. Haven't tried an older driver, I'll have a look.

Hi again Ken. Before i did anything else, I thought I would try running my repair software, don't know if you know about it , it's called tweeking.com. I ran all the most important repairs and much to my surprise I am now getting 37.50 to 38.70 download . So it seems to be sorted. I'd like to thank you for all your help in this, now I can sleep at night. Keith.
