OS Freezes when connecting to 5G internet - no BSOD, force restart

Since the Microsoft Anniversary update, I have been unable to connect to my wireless router's 5G internet connection (the 2.4 works just fine). As soon I input the password and hit connect it locks everything up - no BSOD, and I have to force restart.
Have run sfc/ scannow and there were no corrupt files. Updated driver for Realtek 8821AE Wireless LAN 802.11ac PCI-NIC and no changes.
Have tried to attempt in safe mode with networking but I'm unable to see any wireless networks in safe mode.

You need to do a Clean Install not a upgrade. Delete the device and driver in device manager for the network device, reboot and let windows reinstall. Also check router settings to make sure that SSID is not hidden and that you are not using MAC rules to block or allow devices.
