Don't know what ipc$ is, even after Googling it.

The inter-process communication share (IPC$) is a special share that lets your PC know what all the other available shares are.

Still not completely clear, but it doesn't matter to me, I'll hopefully never have to use it.

No, it's saying that on this computer you already have a drive letter mapped to the other computer's D: drive. By default a mapping you made previously is reconnected after rebooting. Type net use to see a list of exiting mappings.
But I still want to map a drive letter to the D: drive on JIMSPUTER, since the error is not correct, as I understand it, what's next?

Your screenshot shows you already have drive Z: mapped to a share on JIMSPUTER. You cannot connect to two shares on JIMSPUTER using different credential for each.

    This behavior is by design.

Either disconnect your Z: drive and reconnect it using the same credentials as you want to use for D$ or use the IP address workaround in the above link.

As near as I know I used the same credentials when mapping to Z:, user name Boppy and there is only one user on JIMSPUTER.
I disconnected the Z: drive and re-ran the command as Administrator and got error 86 "The specified network password is not correct.

The password we (my wife and I) use on all our computers is the same! [i tried to delete the image?]

I'm finally able to map to folders on my D: drive, I had to make them shareable. I tried the same thing with the drive itself and still get an Access is denied error.

Thanks all for your help, I won't mark this as solved since it really isn't, but the work around works fine.
