Windows 10 Wired PC Updates - HughesNet Metered Internet Connection

I live in a very rural location where my only ISP choice is Hughesnet. As such, my data consumption is metered during the day, but available, almost free at night (2AM - 8AM). I can control Windows restarts in settings, but no way to control when updates are downloaded. Update downloads occur randomly during the day consuming considerable (expensive) data. My laptops are connected to the same router via Wi-Fi. I can control Wi-Fi update downloads using the "metered connection" configurations in these laptops connected by Wi-Fi, but this is not available for wired (PC) connections. I have purchased a USB wireless adapter for my PC, in an effort to utilize Wi-Fi and hopefully configure to "metered connection" and then eliminate the update downloads during the day.
    So:
Once I install the new adaptor, will switching to Wi-Fi be a problem? Is there a way to switch back and forth in an effort to occasionally use Ethernet for additional speed with Hughesnet, which is annoyingly slow, but better than anything else available here. I have a NetGear router which works well with both my laptops on wi fi and my wired PC currently. Any suggestions appreciated! Thank you.
