    Add internet time switch to for child safety

    Hello
    the Son of a friend of mine has a habit of getting up,in the night to do online gaming. I would like to know the best way to install a timer to block all internet access to his PC during certain hours....preferably with a warning 10-20 minutes prior.
    I believe he has a Local standard account....as far as I can tell this needs to be part of an MS family to allow child restrictions.....can this account be converted to this, or will it be necessary to,create a new account.

    I have looked at several internet timer programs....inc internet access controller by gearbox computers....which looks now to be freeware....but whatever I do to the schedule it doesn't seem to turn off the internet...

    any help,would really be appreciated.

    Get a router with it built in or just set some rules and set the Parental Controls on the OS to stop them from using it.

    My kids had to use the computer in the common area of the house, until they got to the point that they could have it in their rooms.

    The third party firmware do allow for time limits. The Gateway I have allows you to set time limits, same as my Access Point. Unless they can figure out the Gateway password or try to reset it to get around, then you have a parenting problem, not a kid problem. Two Strike rule comes in really handy to set the ground rules and let them know that until they can start paying the bills, you the parent are in charge. They tend to change their attitudes real quick, when gadgets start disappearing out of their lives for a few weeks.

    Sorry to say there is a parenting issue here.....if done on a router it could just be reset....
    looking for a program with a password.....very simple, but the one I tried ' internet access controller' seems to do nothing.
    wonder if someone could try this program and see if it's me or if it actually doesn't work

    thanks

    Hi there
    @reddwarf4ever

    Have to agree with you that this is a 100% parenting issue --in any case since these kids will invariably have at least one mobile phone you are on to a loser here they can always switch to using the phone which could be even more dangerous.

    The solution is to have serious discussions and how this type of activity can lead to serious Gambling dependency and definite money problems in future - and these days even one tiny smidgen on a credit report will almost end forever any chance of getting a credit card / mortgage or even being able to open a Bank account in the future -- and these days it's almost impossible to do without any sort of bank card etc.

    Just try walking into a decent Hotel in USA and trying to pay with cash !!!!! it's probably easier to sneak your way into the CIA headquarters than pass the Hotels ID checks !!!!!

    If you really insist then a decent way would be to set up a gateway so the computer goes through a "Proxy Server" --easy to set up at home. That way you have a log of every site visited and you can set the operative times of the server.

    There's some decent links here

    How to Set a Proxy Server or a Gateway for a Wi-Fi Connection | Chron.com

    This still doesn't stop mobile phone usage though if user uses 3/4G and access Internet that way and not through WIFI.

    Hi there

    @reddwarf4ever

    Try this with your router. Valid both for Wifi and LAN.

    How to Use Your Router to Limit People's Internet Usage | Chron.com

    You need to find the MAC address of the computer - then it works fine -- however this still doesn't stop Internet access via mobile phone using 3/4G services - and a knowledgeable youngster can easily set up a phone as an Internet access point to get round your restriction -- of course he'd be paying for DATA rather than free Wifi - depends on the Phone contract of course.

    BTW most decent routers will display the MAC id of connected devices if you have trouble finding it - just logon to the internet on the relevant computer, then on another machine connect to your router and one of the settings somewhere will display status of connected devices with MAC id's.

    Cheers
