Networking DCH and SMTP can they work together?

Hello all. As you can see I am new here and I know little to very little about networking, etc. I use Comcast as my internet provider but have NO email account that I use with them. I am trying several email encryption programs and they are asking for SMTP settings. I have found what they should be. HOWEVER, I believe I am DHCP(?). When the computer starts it gets the addresses that it needs automatically. I have 3 email accounts and each one can be accessed via Chrome or Mozilla without any intervention from me. When I go into the SMTP settings boxes for these encryption programs I have entered, for example, smtp.gmail.com and tried smtp.comcast.net and the other settings and when I click "test" it fails. If I remember I get a message that says it CANNOT FIND THE SERVER...I have tried to find any network settings but in win10 it just has USE AUTO PROXY SETTINGS checked and that's it. So, I guess my questions is - can I use SMTP settings (in the programs configure box) when I am assigned my internet info by DHCP?? IF this is possible then HOW do I do it and WHERE do I do it? Thanks for any enlightenment on this. HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all!

Welcome to the forum dhcp gives you you ip address nothing to do with smtp. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is an Internet standard for electronic mail transmission. First defined by RFC 821 in 1982, it was last updated in 2008 with Extended SMTP additions by RFC 5321, which is the protocol in widespread use today.

I assume what is needed is the smtp server for the encryption program.

If you connect to gmail using SMTP, you can only send mail to Gmail or Google Apps users; if you connect using SSL/TLS, you can send mail to anyone. If your device or application supports SSL - connect to smtp.gmail.com on port 465. To connect with SSL, you need to provide a Google username and password for authentication.

Gmail and Outlook ( no clue on comcast) are Webmail servers and require you to activate IMAP on their Settings Pages ..... AFAIK , then SMTP will work for example with Windows Live Mail (WLM) that I still use.

Generally, it isn't true, but you need to be authenticated Gmail user for sending e-mails to everyone.
