Is there anything else I can do to record details about a torrent file I've downloaded other than taking screenshots of the torrent URL?

I'd be in BIG trouble if a torrent site went offline as I'd be unable to check or verify a particular torrent that's on my PC's HDD...

    Hi there

If you use a magnet link - the torrent will start downloading (data files) to the target area of your torrent client. If the download gets interrupted etc the torrent client will start a "re-check" and resume from the point at which the download stopped.

Depending on what site you are using (there's plenty of LEGAL reasons for using Torrents -- a lot of Linux distros use this method now) it's 100% UNWISE ever to download the torrent file directly -- all sorts of traces etc.

I would always when downloading Torrents use something like TOR or a VPN and always use magnet links if you don't want little nasty letters from ISP. Often with all the secret monitoring going on your PC (Google etc) they assume anybody who is using a torrent client is GUILTY -- maybe 90% are but not everybody and using TOR or a VPN or both avoids the problem in its entirety.

If you can handle Linux one of the safest and fastest torrent clients is DELUGE.

    Your reply is much appreciated!

I'm only using Bit Torrent to download legal files like ebooks that are in the public domain.

One other thing that's bothered me is this:

There's a torrent I want to download, but there is only one seed on it so I'm worried that the user seeding is able to change the contents of the torrent.

    Is this possible?

This is what I'm worried about:

Anyone know if it's possible when there's only one seeder for that seeder to change the data contents of the torrent?

    Update:

I've completed downloading the torrent now.

Can anyone suggest a way for me to check that the files within the torrent are unmodified?

I know in Vuze you can export the torrent details, but i have not tried it so not sure what info it export (right click and then advanced)

I have only used private sites in the past, with them it is not possible for a seeder to modify the file and keep seeding it, once you modify it the tracker marks it as invalid and seeding stops

    I'm also using Vuze.

I'll try "exporting" as you say, but I've never seen this option before.

I'd be forever grateful if someone could post other ideas.

    hi there guys..

about the use of the magnet link and then saving the torrent file generated: are you sure that hose torrent will have real info inside? I knew that if using magnet the torrent file stored by the client were useless, and I tried to restore a few interrupted downloads using torrents file saved by the uTorrent and there were no peer found, no trackers at all!

I reinstalled Windows a few days ago and I had downloads not finished yet, so searching google I read that I should have found those magnet link again..

    Hi there

    @brainvision

Why not use Torrent Project Website -- enter your search name and then copy the meta data from the description.

You don't need to download the torrent to get info - it's all displayed -- but if you DO download these days always use the magnetic link and depending on your torrent client you might need to load torrent via URL link or whatever

I use DELUGE - right mouse click on the magnet link --> copy link location and then in the deluge torrent client simply add torrent via URL. The URL is the link you copied from the "copy link location" in the magnet link.

If this site blocked by ISP simply use TOR / VPN - although there's zillions of LEGAL torrents out there - Linux distros are often for example distributed by Bit torrent to save load on servers so why a SEARCH facility should be blocked -- well I suppose these days even POSSESSING info is getting to be controlled - even if you do NOTHING illegal with it !!!!!.

For example I'm looking for info on a Renaissance Rare Classical Musician - GESUALDO

(yes this search site even has info on the most obscure stuff and it's great and simple)

cut and paste the Torrent contents into a spreadsheet -- Job done !!!!!!!

(don't actually copy the Contents itself --just the text plus the file sizes)

Now if you need to re-download / find the torrent again you've got all the info (including trackers if you want) and can see if it's the same one as you started with.

I just had the idea that I could use an app to record a video of me downloading the .TORRENT file.

I could use an app like 'FRAPS' I guess?

Would this be better than storing information about the torrent in a .TXT file?
