File Sharing - Problem Copying Files With File Explorer

With Win7 support gone, I finally got 2 Win10 x64 Pro v1909 machines up and running. Like so many other Win10 users, I have struggled to get network sharing to work. I have Googled, read and followed countless procedures and suggestions over the past few weeks, ad nauseam. The only suggestion I got to work was to enable the less secure SMB 1.0/CIFS Client. I don't like this solution, but it worked.

My (old) printers are USB connected to my desktop and I can print to them just fine from the laptop. No problem.

My issue is with using File Explorer to copy files between the 2 systems using drag and drop. In short, I can drag a file FROM the other PC and copy it, but I can't drag a file TO the other PC and copy it.

When I try to drag a file TO the other PC, I get this red NO symbol:

Yes, I have set Advanced Sharing and Permissions to Full Control for these folders on both systems.

Am I still missing some setting, or is there a know bug/limitation?

Hi, I and others find 'sharing' over a network somewhat hit and miss.

You may find this of interest: personally I wouldn't want to globally or significantly change permissions for the sake of sharing.

Note the statements about SMB1 in Option 1.

There's a bunch of related tutorials listed further down as usual under - yes-

It went through the settings in Option 1 in great detail. Only a few settings needed to be changed.

Most of the settings in the other Options either were already set or did not apply.

I scanned the other tutorials, but did not see any that applied.

Bottom line - I still have the same problem.

I don't understand why sharing has to be so difficult. My previous 2 Win7 PCs were shared with no problem. All I want to do is to be able to copy files between PCs with File Explorer.

Sorry, just to be clear, is SMB1 enabled on both machines?

Yes. This is how both PCs are set.

As I stated initially, I can use File Explorer to copy files FROM the networked PC to the one I am sitting at, but not vice versa. Both PCs behave this way.

I just stumbled upon a very interesting twist to my problem. If you look at the screen shot in my initial post, I got the red NO symbol trying to copy a file to a shared folder named Setup.

On a lark, I created a new folder under Setup named Sub Setup and as the screen shot below shows, I was able to copy the file into this new sub-folder. I'm Confused.

Similarly, I can't copy a file directly to the displayed Desktop folder, but I CAN copy a file to the desktop if I use the route \\LENOVOM83-WIN10\Users\username\Desktop

This is just my very superficial observation and experience.

I set sharing up between my two laptops for the first time a few weeks ago. Initially it was working. But next time I tried transferring files, I couldn't - and from one PC the other simply wasn't seen.

Today, I had this laptop (Thinkpad) on, and switched the other on. To my surprise, I could - this time- 'see' the other PC again from this one. From the other one, this one was shown, but at first clicking on it led - after 30s or so- to a 'Could not access' message.

I ran the troubleshooter, but got 'Could not diagnose the problem'.

Then suddenly I could- and could copy and move files back and forth.

There seems to me- and there are quite a few threads- something basically erratic about it.

Both PCs have exactly the same MS live id as login.

Sorry I can't be more specific.

I hear you. As I said in my opening post, I've Googled countless posts from many sites with similar problems and numerous solutions that mostly don't help.

But you're right, tomorrow I could turn the PCs on and get different results. I have also experienced times where I can't even see the other PC in File Explorer and re-booting one or the other fixes it... until next time.

Like many other posts I've read, networking, file sharing and printer sharing shouldn't be this difficult or intermittent.

I wonder what my experience will be in the morning when I power them off later tonight. Dunno.

Must admit I'm not very knowledgeable about Windows networking, but could you assign a static network address to each machine, would that not make a more consistent sharing experience?

One thing I see you may be missing. Services.msc/ Run as Admin.
Function Discovery Provider Host must be set to Automatically start. Sometimes we need to restart this function if our client are not showing up.
Function Discovery Resource Publication: Same as above.

These two function must be running for your network to function. On all computer in the network, You should turn off SMB 1 you shouldn't need it if these two functions are running.

On your shares and Security setting. I have found that setting up Users that "Authorized User" with full control is all I need to share. You must have the exact same User set up on each unit in the network exact same User Name and Password Exactly. a space or Capitol letter any difference in the user name or password will prevent connections. I know this as it took me a couple of days to find that on one unit had my User Name as Clinton J Wright and the rest had my user name as Clinton J. Wright. Now this worked in windows 7 and Windows 8.1, but Windows 10 would not accept it with out the period after the J. This common user does not have to be active or open, it only has to be a User on each computer. My Wife computer runs her User account and my User account on her computer is just there and I have full access to her shared files. One other thing My User Account on all computer is a Admin Account.

I still have on occasion have trouble with my network computers 2 of them on on 24 - 7 and for some reason the Function Discovery Services fail to work when I see this i just type in Services.msc scroll to these two functions and restart them every thing works again.
Again SMB 1 is not turned on, on any of my network computer 3 of these computer were built or bought in 2013 and all them 3 were Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, upgraded to Win 8.1 Pro 64 bit and again upgraded to Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, with the exception of my Wifes HP all in one, she did not want to learn a new OS after the 8.1 upgrade so I have left her with 8.1.

I just thought of a couple of other things I have found over the years using MS Workgroup networking.
My Router is set up for DHCP however I have Assigned static IP's for each of my computers and most of my other clients, which include TV's, DVR's, DVD's BD's Player, DTV whole Home, Sling Media, Cell Phones, last time I worked on them I think I have 29 total

That's one of the first things I learned while Googling the problem. Both PCs are set to auto.

I'll check the rest of the things in your post in the morning.

Each PC only has 1 user (admin) set up. I verified both are correctly entered.

When I powered up the PCs this morning, each one saw the other in File Explorer, no problem.

I still don't understand why I can't drag/drop to copy a file from one machine into the shared folder on the other machine, but I can drag/drop copy a file into a sub folder. I can work around the issue but I'm just curious why Win10 behaves this way.
