Can't Create A Hotspot That Works

I have been trying to create a hotspot from my HP laptop, which runs Windows 10, for a while (my laptop is connected to the internet by an ethernet cord). However, I keep running into roadblocks. I followed the instructions found here:

I've also followed the instruction on the apps found from the Windows App Store that give you instructions on how to use your laptop to broadcast wifi.

I have been able to successfully create and "start" a network that could broadcast wifi, but the new network, under the category of "Access Type", always says "No Network Connection". There is no connectivity problem with the ethernet itself. My laptop surfs the web just fine. But for some reason, the new networks that I create in order to broadcast wifi will always display "No Network Connection". I've tried troubleshooting it for a while but to no avail.

Does anyone know what might be going on? I appreciate any advice.

I am having the same problem, and instead of starting a new thread to rant about it I thought I would just keep up with this one.

I have a 4 day old laptop--bought new from the store with Win 10 factory installed. I updated Windows this morning, which was an absolutely arduous affair---ESPECIALLY considering this laptop is BRAND NEW, I should not have needed a 2 hour update. I've verified that all drivers for Network adaptors are up to date. And, I have also tried the command (admin) lines.

No dice. Still see: Hosted network supported : No

"The hosted network couldn't be started.The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation."

Frankly, after having grown up with Win 3.11 and used all the Windows systems up to Win 7 (which we also use at my work in research), I am rather P*ssed. This is only really the last bit of icing on the cake but after 4 days, not being able to find anything or do anything and having a patchwork affair that has yet to do anything that I want....I want to go back to OSx.

If anybody can help, I would really appreciate it. Because as is, I am very probably going to take this thing back and spend an extra 1000$ on a "cheap" mac, which I don't want to do. I'm fed up beyond belief--also I have spent hours cruising the Microsoft Help threads and they are absolutely not helpful. Any advice?

I might be stating the obvious here -- but usually the simple stuff gets forgotten.

I take it the LAPTOP is going to be the Internet access computer - however it will be using Wifi so the second machine can communicate via Wifi.

Is the Wifi port active as well on the laptop. You need to ensure that that's active as well.

I have an incredibily fast wifi adapter in the laptop and want to share Wifi with a NAS type server that doesn't have a wifi card. I connected a Crossover Ethernet cable from the NAS box to an Ethernet port on the laptop -- works perfectly.

(I have actually got an ASUS ac56 usb3 wifi adapter for the NAS box - but currently having a problem getting a driver for it that works in Linux so temporarily using the laptops wifi connection).

Not sure why your system doesn't work -- I've also shared a wifi connection at times setting up a MOBILE phone as the access point too so the idea does work.

Check also any firewalls - or AV software to see if they are blocking connections.

(I know in theory you could only need one adapter on the laptop - but the second machine needs to communicate with something and it's easier to test with BOTH adapters working. - When that's done then try messing around with the Ethernet only stuff).

Using a crossover cable and wifi makes for easy testing

To connect two computers with a crossover cable

1.Plug each end of the crossover cable into a network port on the back of each computer.


2. On one of the computers do the following:

Open Network and Sharing Centre by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type network, and then click Network and Sharing Centre.

3.In the network map at the top of Network and Sharing Centre, double-click the Unidentified network* icon. (If you have more than one network, this icon will be labelled Multiple networks.)

--Crossover cable -- only around 5 EUR. Once you've got the idea then I suggest you experiment with ONE adapter --I've found anything with Windows and Networking is usually a horrendous affair (coming from Linux school).

I theory sharing network should be EASY !!!!!. I suppose another idea would be to use the second computer as a "Proxy Server" or a gateway - but that's another level of complication.
