OK, In Nerttwork settings, I have 2 listed items
    Broadband Connection and Ethernet.
The trouble-shooter in Network settings came back with original error dialogue box

right click on each one and in properties it will tell you what the controllers are for each one...when you click properties it will open the networking tab and directly underneath it will say connect using ****** (usually controller)... that's what we want to know and get the appropriate win 10 driver for that controller

Hey Tim, go into network settings, scroll down to change adapter settings and right click on local area connection and go to properties and lets find out what controller you have on board...before that go into network and sharing and run the trouble shooter problems first...I have a feeling this is an easy fix...It was working on win 7 and it will work again on win 10

Dude, you may have airplane mode enabled!! check that first. I should have thought of that before. Let me know

open settings go to network and internet , second item on the left is airplane mode. Open that and make sure that toggle is off!!

I'm not sure if affects the wired connection or not but make sure anyway

    AnEdge,

    Settings/ Network & Internet ...
L.H.S. Data; VPN; Dial-up; Proxy; when using the search box (top/right) it does not discover Airplane Mode.

Just to muddy the water a little more. I have compared the above settings on the problem computer with this one. Under VPN on this one, there are 2 switches, which are not present on the problem computer ... curious??

If I may be so bold, I have a suggestion to put to you, it is something that I don't want to do, but just wonder if it may be worth it. . I remove the SDD frfom my problem comp, which was windows 7 but is now Win 10. Put in my original Windows 7, migrate Windows 7 to my SSD and then re-install the SSD and redownload Windows 10 onto the SSD. I truly feel that there must be something wrong with this particular download.

    Your comments would be appreciated.

    Timwas8,

Go to Control Panel, open Network and Internet then, Network and Sharing Center, click on Change adapter settings on the left side to open Network Connections. Select your network adapter that is giving you the problems and select Change settings of this connection. Grab a screenshot of the result and post here. Also, are there any other adapters listed besides the problem one? If so post what are they and any details that you note about them.

That's too much Tim, just try going into settings, update and security>Recovery>reset this PC and choose to keep everything...If that doesn't work the then you can do a clean install using the Techbench ISO, which is very easy...you can Google that procedure and there are a lot of videos.

Watch this reset video first https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVzpA1qZ6S0

let me know how it goes

I cannot be rude to Railtech who is kindly trying to help, but ... I am so close to welcoming back Windows 7 again. The thought of going through this again is very offputting for me. The extent of my knowledge on this topic could be written in "H1" on a pinhead.

    Timwas8,

I suspect that your network adapter driver files are not compliant with Win 10. You can get the latest drivers at the link below.

    http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList..._815x_816x.exe

Once you have the driver file downloaded you must extract the contents of the file so create a folder to place the downloaded file in and then extract the files from the .exe download. You can try Windows extraction by right click on the file however Windows cannot extract all file types so if extract does not appear in the right click menu you will need to use something like 7zip to do the extraction.

Once extracted, open Device Manager, look for Network adapters and expand it. Locate the Atheros Qualcom entry, click to select, then right click and choose Update driver. When the dialogue box appears select Browse my computer for driver software then point to the folder where you did the extraction of the downloaded file and choose OK. Windows will locate the appropriate files and install them.

This should clear up your problem.
