This post by MRoth did it for me! I deleted AVAST and rebooted. The internet connection now works. :)
This is on a Comcast/xfinity connection. I called them and they were of no help. Told me to call MS. I did but they were of no help in getting me connected, although I now have a case number. When they call back I will let them know that the problem was AVAST.
