    VPN hangs at "disconnecting"

    when I disconnect from my work VPN, sometimes it hangs at "Disconnecting".

    VPN hangs at "disconnecting"-vpn-hang.jpg

    the only indication is when I try and reconnect nothing happens the "Connect" button just flashes.

    the only way to reconnect is to reboot.

    am I the only one getting this, and if not is there a solution to this behaviour????

    Regards Wayne

    VPN hangs on disconnecting - solution

    Hi.

    It happens to me time to time (Windows10) and then I can disconnect via command prompt (run as Administrator) typing: rasdial "vpn_name" /disconnect

    Hope it helps.

    Hmmm, although this (thread) is half a decade old, issue seems to remain.
    I'm just stuck at "Disconnecting", just like the original poster here.
    Also, the RASDIAL.EXE call does not work.

    Any other ideas on how to force disconnection?

    Yes I found that sometimes I get that as well
    Code:
    rasdial "vpn_name" /disconnect
    did not clear problem. This problem has been around since Windows v6.x (Vista) and on server systems as well. I fixed one time by disabling not in use connections in my case WIFI and bluetooth as I was on Ethernet cable but have not tried that again as usually reboot.
    • Make sure VPN connection settings are for TCP/IP and no bindings for QOS or filesharing unless you actually use it on your LAN.
    • Sometimes cloning VPN connection work and sometime it does not, so I keep 2 duplicate clones which I have tested after a reboot.
    • When cloning for first time, double check all your setting are the same. I found IPSEC key needed to be reentered (this may not apply to your VPN type).
    • Enable/disable Ethernet never made any difference to clearing "disconnecting" VPN status (my case VPN over Ethernet connection).

    Still hunting for a 100% solution other than reboot which is really annoying.

    There are a lot of good ideas in this article fix-windows-vpn - written for connecting issues. I will try some of the netsh commands they may help with stuck on disconnecting as well.

    Update:
    During last "disconnecting status stuck" (DSS).

    After using the "netsh" commands they seriously screwed up settings by wiping various settings in my LAN. As I know all my settings well it was not a big deal but it was more trouble using "netsh" commands so won't be doing that again. A lot of the commands after doing them show a message please restart your computer so not as useful as I thought.

    • Put back missing settings;
    • test dialled VPN clone (VPN setup before any problems) it failed too;
    • I tried "diagnose" button shown near error code;
    • solution reported is enable WIFI;
    • I do that and dial VPN clone failed again;
    • still fails; try diagnose again;
    • solution report is enable Bluetooth;
    • did that and dial clone again and DSS cleared - so weird will need to try this again. I hung up VPN clone;
    • disabled WIFI and Bluetooth as I don't use them at home;
    • dial original "vpn-name" and continue. (I use original "vpn-name" because I have event triggers that are tied to "vpn-name" so that why I don't just stay using a working VPN clone.)

    The suggestions will be different if your on desktop and have no WIFI and/or Bluetooth - I wonder what it would report? The presence of multiple networks (i.e. LAN/WIFI/Bluetooth network connections) on a system MAY be a factor in this problem (theory).

    These are Expressvpn.com L2TP VPN connections I setup and I don't know if that is relevant.
