    Running programs from NAS

Ever since installing Windows 10 (clean) I'm facing several network related issues. Before going in depth I'd like to figure out if it's a problem with my PC or if it's a problem with Windows 10 in general.

I'll just stick to one problem for now.
I have a Synology NAS and connected a directory there as network drive. I have some programs there that won't work when run from this location.

    GameSave Manager/HandBrake Setup/Notepad++ Setup
"The Application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application."

    WinMergeProtable
Process shows up in Process Explorer but closes immediately.

Audacity Portable/WinDirStat Portable (and probably more programs using the PortableApps.com Launcher)
    "X:\Programs\WinDirStatPortable\App\AppInfo\Launcher\WinDirStat Portable.ini is missing [Launch]:ProgramExecutable - what am I to launch?"

    AIDA64
Program works but no icons appear.

There are more but I think those few suffice for now.

All of those programs work fine once I copy them to a local drive and run them from there. Windows 7 ran the very same programs from a network drive without any problems.

That's one problem for now. Can anyone reproduce this? I won't even touch the fun stuff like how playing a video from my NAS causes downloads (to the NAS) to stop because of access errors.

I guess having a NAS is a bit too exotic.
Any other ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

Sounds like it might be an account permissions setting on your NAS. The upgrade to Windows 10 will generate new internal IDs for the accounts, even though they are the same user name and password. I've got no problems with my DLink NAS - but the only programs I run from it are setup/install programs. I also have no access errors when my media computer is playing videos from the NAS and I am reading/writing files to it on my laptop.

I do run a multi-game disk saved on my NAS called American Horrors - I had to map a drive letter for that. That would be about as close to actually running programs from the NAS - it has a main install program that runs directly off the NAS (via the mapped drive letter) then displays a menu of the available sub-programs for installation. It wouldn't wok without a mapped drive letter.

Did you reinstall those programs after you upgraded to Windows 10? You probably lost the link to those programs after the upgrade as the network sharing protocol may not be the same between 7 & 10.
If you did not re-install your programs, you can verify the issue by re-installing one of the programs and see if that works. If so, you may have to re-install everything back to your NAS. Sometimes the same problem will occur with programs installed on external drive. But since you are using NAS, it is more complicated and prone to such issues.

I created a new Windows and NAS account and threw all permissions I could find at it. No change.
And if it's really a permission problem then I wonder what those programs have in common.

No, as all the mentioned programs are portable and do not require an installation to run. It also doesn't explain why some setups won't work.

Odd, just extracted Aida to a folder on my Synology DS213j. Works fine. No out of the ordinary permissions are used.

I wonder if the programs that won't run from the NAS would run when installed on an External USB drive attached to the computer? In the past I've seen some programs that wouldn't run except when installed on a drive physically attached to the motherboard in the computer. I just tried a couple of rather simple programs, one said there was not enough space [58MB] available on a 1TB NAS HDD with over 400GB free and the other needed 9.6MB but didn't list any USB or NAS drives as possible destinations.

Everything works fine. I've used the launcher to install them and to launch them. I've also launched them directly from Windows explorer. .
Tested AIDA, Irfanview, Windirsat, Notepad ++. Audacity Winmerge . All fine. Weird.

Synology DS213j . Is your DSM up to date ?, mines on DSM 5.2-5592 Update 4

"Ever since installing Windows 10 (clean) I'm facing several network related issues." end quote. You may have to expand on this. Synology's are pretty bulletproof imho.

It was set to Enable SMB 2, which must be the default as I don't recall changing anything there. Doesn't help though.

They do. Only the combination of network + Windows 10 causes problems.

    DS214, same version.

I'm not sure under which circumstances this occurs (should have paid more attention) but when copying/moving/deleting files I (randomly?) get an error telling me to remove the write protection but all I need to do is click retry and it works. I'm using Total Commander for all this. Not sure if that matters.

There's also that video problem which I already mentioned above. I didn't do too many tests yet because I wanted to look into the program issue first.
When I start playing a video from the NAS (maybe just certain videos?) it more or less reliably happens that downloads cancel in a way that would suggest that the drive they were downloading to (the NAS) suddenly became unavailable. But I just noticed that running ImgBurn appears to have the same effect.
It might also happen that videos just stop playing when I do stuff with files on the NAS. Media Player Classic would just act like the file reached its end.

It's like certain "load" causes problems.

While writing this I happened to remember that my router can also be used as NAS. So I enabled that, assigned a drive letter and shoved to programs there. The programs work from the routers internal memory as well as from a connected USB drive.
I also got my hands on a x86 Windows 10 tablet for a few minutes. It had the same problem so I can also rule out a driver issue. To be sure that it's still a Windows 10 exclusive problem I just connected an empty HDD to my PC and installed Windows 7 there. Works.

So I guess it's the NAS even though I still kind of doubt it. But what else is there other than my router? I could try connecting the NAS directly but I think that would require a switch or crossover cable. I have neither at the moment.

I also just tried a factory reset since I can always restore a backup. Didn't help.
No clue how to further narrow down the problem. I can't imagine that it's just a wrong configuration somewhere.

You can try resetting the credentials by deleting your stored NAS credential in you Windows machine first.
It is in: Control Panel\User Accounts\Credential Manager
