No network connection after windows 10 upgrade

Hi, after upgrading from windows 8.1 to windows 10 I have no internet connection.
From looking around various forums the problem is usually a VPN or anti virus issue so I have used the f secure removal tool to uninstall my anti virus and used revo uninstaller to remove hotspot shield VPN from my PC before upgrading with no success. The network connections icon looks connected when the pc is first turned on then it changes to the yellow exclamation mark. I have updated the network adpater driver to the latest and also tried plugging in a USB wireless adapter which has the same problem. Will refresh your pc in windows 10 resolve this issue and does this remove all my saved files?

Hi and welcome to the forum! :)

I don't know, if refreshing the PC will solve this issue - maybe it does. A refresh keeps <strike>all</strike> your personal files, but it will also tell you what it is going to do, before you hit the final "do it" button.

When I have such connection issues, I always check, if the IP addresses, which the internet connection is using, are correct. Basically, if you use a WLAN, it can happen, that the PC is not using your WLAN hotspot to connect to the internet, but a different one. The IP address of the default gateway then is wrong. E.g. it's the one of your neighbour. Logically as you do not have the right password, this then fails. That then looks that way.

Please note that Windows Refresh does NOT "keep all your files"! If you check the MS info for Refresh, you will see that it clearly states that it does not retain applications you have installed from external sources.

I mainly use a wired connection but added a USB wireless adapter to try that aswell, also tried static ip address and winsock reset, same problem on both, I will try the refresh options once I back up my files.

I used the reset my pc option which saved my files but deleted installed programs and this resolved the issue, after this I tried to reinstall hotspot shield which cut of my internet connection while installing the tap driver but I was able to uninstall it and get my connection back.
