    Printer is Offline

I am running Windows 10 Pro version 22H2 (OS Build 19045-4412)
My printer is an HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 connected the the network by ethernet.

I tried printing a document this morning but keep being told that the printer is offline. HP Smart shows the printer and I am able to print all the diagnostic pages from the printer. I have followed all the instructions from HP, which are mainly to power everything off and then on again, and that was a waste of time. I updated everything going from 19045-4355 to 19045-4412 and the MS Office 365 update, again nothing.

I have a laptop connected by cable to the same network, same operating system 4355 and now 4412, and it has no problem printing!

The only difference is that Windows Update gives me the 0x80070643 error which the laptop does not have. Copilot has a number of suggestions, but I hope someone here has a solution to this printer not ready problem. BTW, the Fax part of that printer shows as ready.

    Thanks.

Check if you have the latest printer driver on the problem computer.

BTW, I can't comment on HP Smart because I find it annoying. Whenever I install the HP Basic Driver it insists on installing HP Smart also. Since I don't need it I just uninstall it. I use the HP Printer Assistant to print, scan, and run diagnostics.

Thanks for the reply. I un-installed all the HP programs and then tried to install to complete package I just downloaded from HP. It could not install saying it had problems with the connection. I tried HP Smart again from the MIcrosoft store and that installed. HP Smart works and shows me the printer. When I try to print a page using Word, it show the printer as offline.

The connections I have, both ethernet or wi-fi work fine. My laptop with the same software and on the same network has no problem printing. So, I am fairly sure it is some weird software problem my computer. I will have Defender do an offline scan before I format drive C:

Have you tried using HP Scan Doctor.

I've had trouble with printer installs in the past using the HP Smart software. I ended up going directly to the HP website entering the printer type choosing driver downloads and installed it that way.

Yes, I tried using scan doctor. No help there.

I just did a clean install of Windows 10 PRO, did the latest windows updates, installed Microsoft Office 365 and then tried to install the software I just downloaded from HP. It found the printer and got to Installing Network Device, and there it failed.

I have no idea why that install failed. Maybe the problem is caused by one of the Microsoft updates.

I just installed HP Smart again. This install finished and I was able to use Word to print. I guess this means the problem is solved, but I wish I knew what caused the problem.

I will be busy re-installing all my apps for the next few days. 😭

I think my motherboard is failing. Speedtest shows 18.11 Mbps down and 0.17 Mbps up. It should be 900+ Mbps down and up. The motherboard is 9 years old, so I should have expected it.

Are you connected with a wired Ethernet connection or wireless WiFi?

If Ethernet, then assuming your computer has a 1GBit Ethernet port then you should be getting 800-900Mbps.

If WiFi, are you connected to the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band? What are the specs for your computer WiFi hardware? If it is old such as 802.11g or 802.11n then the speeds you are getting are normal. If 802.11ac then expect 300-400Mbps. If If 802.11ax then expect 700-800Mbps.

I have both wired and wi-fi and right now, I ran speedtest I and got 939.34 Mbps down and 921.83 Mbps up. With the Wi-fi, I got 495.69 Mbps down and 611.29 Mbps up. That is about normal, for my system.

I finished the clean re-install and tested it with heavy downloading and uploading, and then speedtest drops to about 1% of normal. I am suspicious of one utility that is supposed to improve my Internet connect, doing the exact opposite and I removed it. I will also clean all the air filters in my case, in case it is a heat problem.

    Thank,

I took apart my computer and gave everything a good cleaning, re-installed Windows and all the applications with one exception and everything is working properly including my network speed. I don't know what caused the problem. I did find a faulty temperature sensor on the motherboard, but that should have made no difference.

    Thanks for the suggestions,
