It says disconnect network mapping but I have no network mappings.

I am trying to access a folder on a network machine.
    win10 at both ends.
one end is a new install.
the other end has worked fine in the past with other machines.
what's happening now is it tells me I have no permissions to access this folder.
so I try to connect in a way that will enable me to input user credentials that I know are good there.
but I can't get any success any which way.
for instance map network machine tells me that folder is already mapped under a different name: remove the mapping.
but there are no mappings. none pop up on the remove mapping screen and this being a new install I know I've never had any mappings on it.
    what to do?

I suggest you do not bother investigating any network address mapping for the time being. Get the network working first.

Check every network setting on every computer using this checklist.

But the network does work and has been working for a long time. I have other win10 machines that communicate, share files on it and currently one but only one linux machine.

It could be useful to know and use your network settings thing and I'll look at it. But that's the background: the lan works.

I was including this in my notion of it not working.
