What's wrong - No Internet But Yes, Internet.

all the apps on firefox - and opera - report they cannot find the internet.

the network/wifi thing in the bottom right corner reports a valid connection, no problem.

    I'm using 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

    wassup?

That's where confusion comes in, Wireless/Wi-Fi is the connection from a computer to the Wireless Router. It depends upon the ISP one is subscribed to as to the type of connection to the Internet, most times there is a Modem connected to the Router which is then connected to the computer/s. There can be a valid connection to the Router but no access to the Internet. Just went through that setting up a new Spectrum Broadband/cable Modem for a client today.

A question, if no Internet what is being used to post here?

another computer on the same lan. i should have spelled that out. the lan is okay, the router is okay, everything is okay but that win10 machine just gone flaky. like it WAS okay. it's not like it has always been like this.

traceroute a website from cmd on the computer that has no internet see what it tells you. if it times out after the gateway then you have a dns problem and considering that you changed dns servers then you would look into that.

if it timeouts straight away then you have a lan issues with that computer so you would look in the router inwards in that case.

You should also do nslookup in cmd to make sure that the name server is matching what you think it is.

not there right now so can't do it but will do it. meanwhile I can report that yes, there's said to be dns issues. got a report from somewhere somewhere along the line: dns server not responding. together with a suggestion to reboot router for it may have some wrong addresses is I think what it said. i'll do that when the family is off the lan. if it don't come good before then.

You can check that that internet connection indicator really is correct by opening the Run box and entering this MS address
    Code:
    www.msftconnecttest.com/connecttest.txt
It should complain that it is not a secure connection but then show you a page containing just the words
    Microsoft Connect Test
if your computer is connected to the internet.
    - You can also run the same test by entering that path in Edge's address bar.
    - You talk about apps in Firefox & Opera. What about just running the browsers themselves instead of any apps within them. You can use the same test for them.
    - The test is the same one that your Taskbar's Network Connection Status Icon uses.

I have never modified my connections by using "8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4" or anything else and know nothing about that aspect of your problem.

    All the best,
    Denis

Try (temporarily) swapping from Google's public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) to Cloudflare's public DNS (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1)... or use a combo (8.8.8.8/1.1.1.1).

Better still, use Steve Gibson's DNS Benchmark to find the fastest DNS from where you are.

I use Sordum.org's DNS Jumper to change DNS addresses quickly and easily.

    Hope this helps...
