Accessing An ADSL Routers Interface Whilst Offline ?

I read recently that it is possible to access a home routers interface whilst the computer and router are NOT connected to the internet.

However the instructions were not clear. In the past my previous routers have asked for an internet connection to access its settings.

As this new router has more settings and there is no instruction book etc I would like to know what is what, before connecting to the Internet.

From the brief details I know, the computer should be connected to the router via Ethernet and the routers address entered into a browser window, is that it ? Surely a router is either on and connected to the internet or off and incapable of anything.

Can someone help me on this ?
    Thanks.

Type the Routers Browser interface IP number into your browser.

    WRONG WRONG WRONG.

You should be able to access your internal router configuration whether there is an active WAN connection or not. You just need to know your router's or modem's local network IP address.

It would help a lot if you provided the exact make and model of the router you are using.

    Open a CMD prompt type
    Ipconfig /all

Note DHCP and gateway both should have the same IP that's the IP you put into a browser to get the setup

Most likely you will still need a userid (probably 'admin') and a password (either a manufacturer default listed in their user guide, or on a physical sticker on the device).

    Possible helpful tip:

Look on your router or under it. There it may say the IP address to access the router and its default username and password which SHOULD be changed upon accessing the router.

Do you need an Internet connection to access the router? No.

The IP address you use to connect to the router is an internal one and only routable in your local Intranet... your local network. So you can access the router or other devices without Internet access perfectly fine. Why your previous router wouldn't let you access it doesn't make any sense to me unless I'm missing something.

    Original poster here.

Am I missing something here. I presume the router would need to be connected to the power supply whilst looking at its settings so surely it will throw out error messages of some kind because its not connected to the Internet, am I not correct ?

The Router is a BT Homehub 5 orpossibly 6.

It has to be turned on but on setting it will show disconnected often with an option to connect

Its presumed you've unboxed and connected something when you come looking for help. So yes, unbox it, connect it, power it on and connect to its web interface by typing it's IP number into your browser.

Sure you can connect to a BT Homehub whilst is not connected to the internet. Done it with BT Homehubs many times.

So long as pc is connected to one of the 4 lan ports (yellow) via an ethernet cable, or via wifi, you only need to enter router ip address in any modern browser.

It will whinge about not being connected to the internet but you can check/ change settings etc.
