Using a NAS to its full potential

This may seem like a simple process, but having never used a NAS before, I am looking for advice.

I have recently purchased a NAS to move everything from my desk top into or onto my NAS, as I am going to run a laptop and dispose of my desktop.

The NAS is all set up on the network, so all is correct on that part.

So, my question is, how do I transfer all my data from my desktop HDD to my NAS?

    1) Can I setup drives the same way I have them on my desktop?
    2) What is the quickest way to move the data?

    Many thanks in advance

I have a Buffalo LinkStation 220 NAS attached to my Wireless Router [WLAN Wireless Local Area Network] by Ethernet cable, any computer whether Wired or Wireless connected to the Router can Map it. In File Explorer I right-click This PC and choose Map network drive... then put in the drive letter and its identification and the default folder to use. Mine is a 2TB NAS, consists of 2 x 2TB drives running as RAID 1 to give a total of 2TB storage. One of the drives is a mirror copy of the other. I use Public as the default folder then create additional folders in it based upon subject such as those listed in C:\Users\USERNAMEHERE\. I use Z as the drive letter only because years ago Windows tended to automatically start network drive lettering at Z and work back up the alphabet but any letter available can be used, it is for the NAS box, not the actual drive/s in it.

Thanks, Berton for the swift reply.

Firstly, I am unsure how to set up the following public folder as the default folder. Then, as you stated, create additional folders inside based on the subject, such as those listed in C:\Users\USERNAMEHERE\

I am using drive N, and I have also tried to sync the folders over using various programs, but all fail due to access denied. However, I can copy and paste without any issues. but trying to copy almost 1TB manually will take forever.

How do I set permissions in Windows 10 security to access the NAS?

Should the NAS show up in computer management window?

    Syncthing

Read about it, use it, love it...

    Samba shares are absolute garbage...

If you need external usage without opening a port (I highly don't recommend that) then try ZeroTier. They also have an Android App... DO NOT use UPnP.

I didn't assign any name or password, just right-click This PC and click Map network drive. I Map the folder on the drive, when set up I created the Public folder, the name could have been anything.

No, mine does not show in Computer Management, probably because that is what it is for, just the computer.
