Shared printer can't be used over WiFi

I’ve been pulling my hair out for the past two months. I have continuing issues with a USB Canon laser printer installed after a clean Win 10 installation on the host computer, including sharing it to my laptop over WiFi. Both computers are running Win 10 ver 22H2, build 19045.3448. I'm also using the latest version of Canon's printer driver on both devices.

Prior to the clean install, the printer worked perfectly with both computers. I’ve since installed, uninstalled and reinstalled the Canon driver and the printer devices multiple times on both, and restarted the print spoolers more times than I can count. I finally have the printer working (again) on the host computer, the one to which the printer is connected via USB. However, in Device Manager, the Event Log still shows the driver as needing “further installation.” I have yet to figure out how to resolve that.

On my laptop, the printer is recognized by Windows. However, sending a document to print from that device still fails – no error message, it just goes to the queue / spooler, and sits there until I delete it. When initially installing the printer on that device, Windows repeatedly returned a “Cannot connect to printer” message. Device Manager does not show any printer available, although it DOES show a print queue for it. I suppose that may be because there’s no printer physically attached to the laptap. It only connects over WiFi to my desktop, the host computer.

I should add that using WiFi to remotely access files on my host computer still works fine. Only the printer is causing problems. Also, printer troubleshooting doesn’t result in any solutions. I’ve even twice updated the Realtek network driver, and still, nothing.

Also, I can physically connect the printer to my laptop via USB, and I'm able to print. The problem is getting it to print over WiFi.

I appreciate in advance any suggestions from anyone.

    Thanks.

Not a printer issue, it is with the computer that it is connected to. Firewall, Internet Security software, Sharing settings are all possible culprits. Suggest getting either a printer that uses wifi or ethernet, or get a router/gateway that allows you to connect the printer to it to use as a print server.

Does the Event Log that shows the driver as needing “further installation.” offer any further information? Does Device Mananger show any error icons?

I agree with @bro67 that it sounds like a host issue.

What's the model no. of the Canon laser printer?

The printer is a Canon ImageClass D530 laser multifunction device. It's a workhorse - never an issue until the clean Win 10 install two months ago. Device Manager for the host shows no errors, and the network router is the same one used for over a year.

Sharing settings could be incorrect, although they are set to allow access to everyone on my "private" network. Firewall settings could also be an issue, although I've turned it off for that same network.

The Event Log for the host shows the dreaded Event 430, Kernel-PnP. In my troubleshooting, I've found that's been a long-running, unresolved issue for other Windows users with a variety of peripheral devices.

Many thanks for the additional information.

From Google searches for the Canon ImageClass D530 multifunction device (printer/scanner/copier) it sounds like only the printer driver component has installed. The Event Log entry showing the driver as needing “further installation.” suggests that the scanner/copier driver is the missing support component for a complete installation.

This suggests you have two seperate problems - 1) incomplete driver installation on the host computer and; 2) network sharing via the laptop.

    Sorry... a few more questions:

Q1. You mention using the latest driver. There appear to be 2 drivers and a toolbox available:
    • UFR II/UFRII LT V4 Printer Driver V7.1.2
    • [Windows 64bit] imageCLASS D530 MFDrivers (UFR II / ScanGear)
    • [Windows 32bit & 64bit] Tool Box Ver.4.9.1.1.mf18
Were these downloaded directly from Canon?

Q2. Did you unblock the downloaded installers before running them?

Q3. Did you run the installers using 'Run as administrator' whilst the USB cable was disconnected?

Q4. It appears from the Canon D530 eManual that there are 2 installation methods - 'Easy' and 'Custom'. Which did you use?

Q5. Was any AV product active when you did the installations or did you temporarily disable any AV product?

Q6. Did the installer(s) either a) at some point prompt you to connect the device using the USB cable or b) did the installations complete without any prompts?

Q7. If b) above, did you reboot your host computer before connecting the printer using the USB cable?

Apologies for the questions but many multifunction devices (especially Canon, apparently... from what I read) are finicky about the installation method and the Canon D530 eManual is specific about not connecting the USB cable until software installation is complete.

I found a Canon Support conversation between GlitchKicker and hadrobinson (starting at 07-20-2022 01:49 PM) that also appears to be relevant, even though it's for an earlier version of Windows 10 than you are using.

    Hope this helps...

Thanks for your interest and assistance. You are correct, the Canon printer can be very finicky, but I've learned to accept its tempermental nature. I’ll attempt to answer your questions in the same order you presented them.

Q1. The driver version 7.12 is not noted as “Recommended” by Canon. This driver is only applicable to the D560 printer, not the D530 that I have.

The UFR II / ScanGear driver (Recommended) is the one I have always used, and I have always downloaded it directly form Canon. It is applicable to bothe my D530 and the D560.

The Tool Box driver (Recommended) only enables scanner functionality. It, too, was downloaded from Canon, and it was installed and working months prior to experiencing the current issues. It doesn’t affect printer operability. In fact, that driver creates a separate “Imaging Device” entry in Device Manager, which is independent of the “Printer” entry. I have never installed that driver on my laptop, because I consistently use my desktop PC (host) for scanning.

Q2. If you’re asking if I unzipped the installation files, no I did not. Unzipping is an automated process when executing the installer.

Q3. Yes, as I always have in the past.

Q4. Easy, as I always have in the past.

Q5. Yes, AV was active. I didn’t disable AV for two reasons – There is no instruction to do so, nor does Canon mention doing so in their online installation guide. In addition, Windows native AV has never interfered with any prior driver installation for any device.

Q6. Yes. The installer presented a prompt to reconnect the USB cable.

    Q7. Not applicable.

I hope my answers are sufficiently clear. Again, thanks for your interest and assistance.

Dunno if this has been discussed earlier, but I found this on Canon's site regarding that same file you use to install the drivers:

Yes, I have always done that during driver installation, and I confirmed that with RickC. Thanks for responding to my issue.

Forgive me, I previously overlooked that link in your reply. I just took a look at it. OMG, I'll buy a new printer if necessary, rather than slog through all that quagmire. Thanks, though..

You might try installing or refreshing the driver with the Printer Driver Wizard. Press the Windows and "R" keys simultaneously on the host computer, type or paste "printui /id" into the "Open" box and click "OK" to start it.

I agree it's not labelled as 'Recommended' but... unpacking the 7.12 installer shows it includes several driver INF files listing the range of Canon printers it supports, including both the D530 and D560 for the port enumerators (WSD, USB, LPT) and apparently they share the same device GUID:

Yet the filename of the ScanGear installer is D560MFDriverV4101WPusEN.exe... as if it's only for the D560.

I meant right-clicking on the downloaded installer files and ticking the Unblock checkbox before going any further:

Windows 10 security, including its built-in AV, has moved on in the last few iterations (like automatically blocking downloaded files before use) so perhaps try an uninstall, reboot then 'Custom' install next?

    Hope this helps...
