    Do you have any tutorials that would help me establish connections between Windows and Mint? I installed Mint, went through several tutorials and I get Access is denied. The folders on Mint I want to share say "The permissions for /home/jim prevent other users from accessing this share".
    How to mount SMB shares in Linux Mint tutorial.

    Hope this helps...

    Sorry if this has been mentioned, or if you already tried it. Try steps 1 to 13:

    Some Linux distros make filesharing with Windows easy by doing all the work for you (like Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu) whilst others make you sweat for it (like Ubuntu itself which, IMO, is not a distro for a Linux newbie).

    If you're a Linux newbie then I suggest you choose your Linux distro wisely... IMO it's a snap with Mint whilst I've had to leap through hurdles with Ubuntu itself.

    Hope this helps...
    @RickC

    I have to laugh, or maybe shake my head in disbelief. If you install Windows Subsystem for Linux, the default is Ubuntu. So far I've noticed that the WSL version of Ubunutu is not case-sensitive and supports a "dir" command in addition to "ls." I have no way of knowing if these features are native to Ubuntu or installed by Microsoft.

    Shaking my head again, Linux Mint is not even on the list of alternative distros for WSL.

    I haven't used Ubuntu too much, but so far my reaction is, "Why bother to use it?" I'm not trolling, and I know that would be thread jacking, which I don't want to do. But if someone wants to start a "why use Linux" thread, I will be happy to jump in.

    @x509 - I haven't used WSL and mainly only use Linux Mint on low-powered netbooks (with max 2GB RAM) to a) keep them going and b) build up familiarity for the day Windows becomes unusable and I finally jump ship.

    Neither off those terms mean anything to me; after Google I am a Sudoer.

    I am a died in the wool Windows user, I installed Ubuntu on an old computer ~6 years ago and used it for File History for 2 computers, install Synergy and used the Ubuntu computer to look at web pages, pdf files, even the calculator when my Windows window was overwhelmed which has turned out to be very useful.
