Denis, I am doing what you suggests:

There, you find both "Private" and "Guest or Public". So, I am just wondering if I set Guest or Public to On or Off ("Networlk Discovery" and "File and Printer Sharing").

When you say "

"a facility which has been known to work on several occasions/", you are not kidding. Yesterday, my desktop showed up in the laptop's Network section, but today, no way to see it there (printers, scanners, ROKU and their grandmothers all show up, even the laptop itself, but not my desktop.

I can access my desktop via entering this address in File explorer's Address bar: \\COMPUTERNAME

So, what would be the easiest way to access my desktop? I am not sure what you mean by SHARENAME (my brain is starting to become mush) , and where would I put the shortcuts for "creating then using shortcuts to each one \\COMPUTERNAME\SHARENAME"?

Okay, I have a working solution.

I am using DOPUS as Explorer replacement, and while nothing shows under Network, if I double-click it, all my desktop shared folders show up. That is all I need.

I thank you for your invaluable help, Denis, and for the input from a few other posters. It is not easy to use a glitchy OS (Network) that must also be one of the most complicated pieces of UI (again, Network)in existence. Phu!!!

I've never heard of Dopus before. If that works for you then fine.

I use Taskbar Toolbars so the easiest solution for me is to create shortcuts to \\COMPUTERNAME\SHARENAME in my Taskbar Toolbars.
- ComputerName being the name of the computer you are connecting to. My checklist's Step 0.
- ShareName being the name you set when you shared a folder. My checklist's Step 6.
- And I'm not limited to shortcuts to the shared folders themselves. I also have some to specific folders of interest within them such as \\H22\ExtData\Video\EditingHub\TV\Recordings where H22 is the target ComputerName & ExtData is the shared folder ShareName on H22.
In my Windows 11 computers, I installed a utility called ExplorerPatcher that allows me to have Taskbar Toolbars in that OS as well.
- Without any Taskbar Toolbars, you'd stick your shortcuts somewhere convenient such as a folder on your Desktop.

In addition to never having to use the unreliable File explorer, Network section I never have to use the Start menu either. Everything I want is in my Taskbar Toolbars - shortcuts to individual files & folders, shortcuts to applications, shortcuts to my own batch/vbs/powershell files, internet shortcuts.

Denis, looks like Taskbar Toolbars is the same as an app that I am using, namely True Launch Bar (True Launch Bar • Superior replacement for standard Quick Launch), which puts menus holding URLs or folders/files on the taskbar.

And, let me just say that Dopus is an awesome replacement for File Explorer (Directory Opus).

I will try Taskbar Toolbars and ExplorerPatcher on my laptop when I get it up and working. (One example on things that happens: installed Firefox, but it created no Profiles. Very strange, but I will check and fix Users, because it might have screwed things up.)

Thank you for sharing your setup and thank you for helping me getting through this ordeal (it is an ordeal only because after factory reset of my Samsung phone, it is on the fritz in spades, and our new TV and Roku clicker have caused voice syncing to be all over the place (±3 seconds). So, challenges abound!
