OK, I'm with you now.
I thought you were asking whether to set your network as Private or Public.
Only set the Private section to Network discovery & File and printer sharing on.
Denis
Thank you, Denis.

Getting there! However, need to ask about this:
I have no note about a user name and password for my own local admin account, and I cannot remember if I set one or not.
How can I check if I have one, and how can I set one if I do not have one? (I have googled a lot, but no success.)
And, if I do not have one, is there a default instead: MS account login data or Windows login data?
Thanks!

Hans,
You do not have to set a password for a local account but ...
- If you are currently logged in to another user account whilst online then that passwordless one is just sitting there waiting to be exploited by a hacker.
- There is no default password, you are invited to set a password when you create a user account.
- If you log in to a passwordless account and then reboot, I think you will be taken straight through logging into it again with no choice given. It's hardly the end of the world because you can then just log out of it. I have not tested this for years and it might no longer apply for all I know.
I have no idea if network setup step 4 works with a passwordless Admin account. I've never tried it.
You cannot retrieve a password for any user account [local or MSAccount], you can only [MSAccount] reset it or [local account] change it.
Change passwords of Local and MSAccounts - TenForumsTutorials
Options 5 & 6 allow you to set a new password for a local account without knowing what the previous one was.
Write it down somewhere secure yet accessible.
Your previous questions were about step 5 of setting up the network.
You're now asking about step 4.
It doesn't matter which order you do things in as long as you do them all.
All the best,
Denis
Denis, you said this:
10 Now you can test individual shared folders by
- browsing to them from the \\COMPUTERNAME location used in step 9, or
- entering their full address in File explorer's Address bar \\COMPUTERNAME\SHARENAME, or
- creating then using shortcuts to each one \\COMPUTERNAME\SHARENAME, or
- browsing to them in File explorer's Network section [a facility which has been known to work on several occasions].
------------------------------
When you say "
"a facility which has been known to work on several occasions/", you are not kidding. Yesterday, my desktop showed up in the laptop's Network section, but today, no way to see it there (printers, scanners, ROKU and their grandmothers all show up, even the laptop itself, but not my desktop.
I can access my desktop via entering this address in File explorer's Address bar: \\COMPUTERNAME
So, what would be the easiest way to access my desktop? I am not sure what you mean by SHARENAME (my brain is starting to become mush) , and where would I put the shortcuts for "creating then using shortcuts to each one \\COMPUTERNAME\SHARENAME"?
Thanks again,
Hans L

Okay, I have a working solution.
I am using DOPUS as Explorer replacement, and while nothing shows under Network, if I double-click it, all my desktop shared folders show up. That is all I need.
I thank you for your invaluable help, Denis, and for the input from a few other posters. It is not easy to use a glitchy OS (Network) that must also be one of the most complicated pieces of UI (again, Network)in existence. Phu!!!

Hans,
I've never heard of Dopus before. If that works for you then fine.
I use Taskbar Toolbars so the easiest solution for me is to create shortcuts to \\COMPUTERNAME\SHARENAME in my Taskbar Toolbars.
- ComputerName being the name of the computer you are connecting to. My checklist's Step 0.
- ShareName being the name you set when you shared a folder. My checklist's Step 6.
- And I'm not limited to shortcuts to the shared folders themselves. I also have some to specific folders of interest within them such as \\H22\ExtData\Video\EditingHub\TV\Recordings where H22 is the target ComputerName & ExtData is the shared folder ShareName on H22.
In my Windows 11 computers, I installed a utility called ExplorerPatcher that allows me to have Taskbar Toolbars in that OS as well.
- Without any Taskbar Toolbars, you'd stick your shortcuts somewhere convenient such as a folder on your Desktop.
Taskbar Toolbars - Creating and naming, customising, moving [post #20] - TenForumsTutorials
In addition to never having to use the unreliable File explorer, Network section I never have to use the Start menu either. Everything I want is in my Taskbar Toolbars - shortcuts to individual files & folders, shortcuts to applications, shortcuts to my own batch/vbs/powershell files, internet shortcuts.
All the best,
Denis
Denis, looks like Taskbar Toolbars is the same as an app that I am using, namely True Launch Bar (True Launch Bar • Superior replacement for standard Quick Launch), which puts menus holding URLs or folders/files on the taskbar.
And, let me just say that Dopus is an awesome replacement for File Explorer (Directory Opus).
I will try Taskbar Toolbars and ExplorerPatcher on my laptop when I get it up and working. (One example on things that happens: installed Firefox, but it created no Profiles. Very strange, but I will check and fix Users, because it might have screwed things up.)
Thank you for sharing your setup and thank you for helping me getting through this ordeal (it is an ordeal only because after factory reset of my Samsung phone, it is on the fritz in spades, and our new TV and Roku clicker have caused voice syncing to be all over the place (±3 seconds). So, challenges abound!
Be well!
Hans L
Hans,
I assume you mean in Windows 11 since Taskbar Toolbars already work in Windows 10.
There are lots of discussions & suggestions in ElevenForum about the Taskbar & getting Taskbar Toolbars back.
Somebody said that TLB could be used on its own in Windows 11 to get Taskbar Toolbars back but somebody else said that was incorrect. The only links I kept to these discussions were
True Launch Bar - ElevenForum - This was more about getting back the ability to have the Taskbar at the top or side of the screen.
True Launch Bar - ElevenForum
I had made notes of about a dozen suggested methods but I tried ExplorerPatcher & it worked so my experiments stopped.
All the best,
Denis
