Didn't prove any point because that's not the whole story.

My router flashed with a third-party firmware called Asus Merlin allows me to turn on or off Intranet capability (forgot the real name) in a guest Wi-Fi network. This is not a feature I've seen in other home routes that I know of, and it's NOT a VLAN. It's not even part of a Wi-Fi Alliance Spec... Not even the ITU, ISO 9001, RFC, etc... LOL!

Subnetting and VLANs are not about RF performance or whatever... certainly not about "fine tuning a network."
Was talking about other types of network performance optimization like traffic shaping through load balancing and packet priorization. VLANs give you more control over that compared to subnets, but this additional control is not neccessarily always required to still be able to meet performance goals.
VLANs are not about 'creating more bandwidth.' Who said that?
The OP did mention that something might be missing. "The nagging feeling of missing something" = trying to cover all bases including the extra fine tuning that one could potentially consider, when there are a lot of WiFi devices and a lot of other variables at play. A network analyzer can help to answer the question of whether or not it might still be worth that effort despite that performance looks to be fine (but one day this might change so it can make sense to look ahead in this regard, to get a handle on whether or not those optimizations would probably be overkill). The bottom line is, when it comes to the subject of using subnets vs VLANs, there exist pros and cons to both─wether you like that or not.

I am familiar with Asuswrt-Merlin, and have been familiar with it for a decade. (My previous router was the Asus RT-N66U.) Never used SAMBA on it because I knew it beforehand that was going to turn out to be a huge security hole regardless of whether you used Merlin on it. Not claiming to be an expert or anything like that. But according to ancient Greek astrology I'm Chiron so Asus is my daughter.

Not sure if we are talking about the same thing but my D Link retail home router, which is probably 4/5 years old, has a button under Guest Zone in the wi fi settings to only allow Internet access.
    From the manual -
    "Internet Access
    Only:
Enabling this option will confine connectivity to the Internet,
preventing guests from accessing other local network devices."

I am not sure the feature you mention is actually that unusual......

Thanks though to you and the other posters for an interesting discussion

Yeah, with routers from Asus you also get this feature, REGARDLESS of whether you use the official firmware from Asus or the Asuswrt-Merlin custom firmware.

...But like I said you could always decide to use the MAC filtering capability of the router to only accept connections from devices whose MAC address you can add/remove to/from a list of multiple MAC addresses, also in addition to deciding to block intranet access.

MACs can be spoofed very easy... In fact, it's one way to get free Internet access on a plane. HAHAHHA "You'll love the way we fly..."
