So using a VPN means giving the VPN operator your data. I only ever use a VPN to access region locked content and the VPN stays off the rest of the time.

It's true to an extent, and it does depend on what you're using it for. I'd say at least 99% of all VPNs out there are crap. Nice to circumvent maybe a web filter or to help keep your traffic hidden (so long as DNS requests are encapsulated) at a public Wi-Fi hotspot or whatever. But the whole privacy/security mantra is way over sold (pun intended).
One could roll their own VPN from home on an Asus branded router using the third-party, easy to use firmware Asus Merlin. Or use a compatible router with another third-party firmware like DD-WRT or OpenWrt, etc. This is great for Wi-Fi hot spots or whatever. If for example I were in London and were geo block on Netflix, I could VPN into my router at home in the U.S. and watch the U.S. Geo blocked content as if I were still at home. As another example I could be at the airport on some open Wi-Fi hotspot and VPN to my home router with the OpenVPN App or OpenVPN PC program. No need to invest in some company's shady VPN service.
I use a VPN now, but to help keep my IP off the logs and whatnot... I also chose my VPN provider very carefully. For what ever that's worth of course. You really can't trust a so-called "no logs policy." Heck, some of these VPNs are probably operated by governments. What a perfect way to attract idiots to your own server... I sure as hell wouldn't use a VPN for hacker shenanigans, that's for sure... That's why hackers use other people's routers. LOL!

Nothing is free
either you pay with your data or by being spammed with advertising.. or you pay for it with money.. or you pay with your time(linux is a good example of that)
as for paid VPNs and privacy.. I think that is different in different countries. what kind of data laws they have.
I use VPN(paid one) to change my shown location and to hide my public IP from less trustworthy sites i might visit when i do research. then i change IP after visit some site that feels a bit shady.

What should i consider?
I know what VPN is and what it isn't.
as i dont use accounts or their online services at facebook, google, apple, microsoft, amazon. i don't have those to worry about.
I don't have VPN leakage either.
So why should i consider stop using VPN as it hide my public IP and that for protects me from getting Ddos attacked or other things if i visit the wrong sites that is put up by hackers to get information and try to infect the computer by scripts embedded in there html code.

That hiding your ip doesn't prevent you from being tracked or sites knowing who you are in many cases.
RE: VPN Leak. I've never used one that didn't leak.

To use a VPN at all times just screws up/ slows down browsing and you cannot say for sure what he operator does with your data.
There are uses for VPN's but don't fall for the marketing that suggests that you should use them 100% of the time.
