    ISP Hub Change

I was supplied with a new Hub from my ISP but never used it. I would like to use it now as the old one is not working as well as it should.
I would like to keep my SSID and Password. I only have laptops, can I expect any problems? I have the info I need to do it.

It should be fine - you will need to logon to router and change ssid and password in router.

Assuming it is dual 2.4/5 GHZ, it depends on router - some you can split ssid so you have a separate one for 2.4 GHZ and one for 5GHZ.

However a lot of routers do not allow SSID to be split anymore and they auto select whether to use 5 GHZ or 2.4 GHZ. Personally, I do not like that as you have no control over which band to use. They claim it is more efficient but I suspect it is just dumbing down for vast majority who probably do not really know the difference, and it is slightly more complicated to set up.

Also, many routers now do not let you manually select channel 1,6 or 11 on 2.4 GHZ anymore either and auto channel switching can be a PITA depending on other signals around you.

In the end, it really comes down to your ISP. In the end, you just have to try it and configure to your tastes.

Your devices will know it's a new network even with it using the same SSID & password.
They will allocate a new network profile name to it in the form SSID 2 or SSID (2).
This should not be a problem but you will notice its name around the place.

The newly assigned profile name will also be recorded in the Registry -
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles
I eventually deleted the old & new profile names and gave my new router new SSIDs.

Many ISP-supplied routers need to be 'activated'... which basically just means allowing the new MAC address to be added to downstream/upstream channels. You may need to inform your ISP of your intended change if the swap-over doesn't work 'out of the box'... so I would perhaps do it on a weekday during the day when ISP support is most likely to be available.

Hi RickC, at present, I am in contact with my ISP help & support trying to figure out why I am loosing D/L speed. I have been asked to do a factory reset on the one I am currently using, but reluctant to do so i case I am unable to do it. The login settings for the newer one are not being accepted.[/I]
