I used to use it many years ago - both in work and at home on my test 'suite' - when it was new and device manufacturers kind of agreed to a standard.

These days I don't bother... more trouble than it's worth unless you have a suite of devices from the same manufacturer - and even then...

I retired nearly 10 years ago... but still have fond memories of waking up legions of remote sites thoughout the entire county (I worked for a local authority) for out-of-hours maintenance using very basic third-party freeware WOL utilities coded by enthusiasts, way before MDM suites of all shapes, sizes and colours. We were the remote gods. ("Come back in the morning and all your problems will be fixed")

In those days we had to roll our own solutions, even though we didn't have one dedicated coder amongst us... and it was fun to try, even better to be first past the post with a consistent, working solution you had worked out yourself.

Heady days... and how I first became introduced to AutoHotkey as an adjunct to the ubiquitous VBS at that time.

WOL now? I still have multiple devices dotted around my home... but would I try to use WOL? Nah... I have better things to do with my time than try to work out a standard that apparently never, ever became a standard.

I know... another long reply. But. In my experience WOL used to work many years ago, mostly by luck... but these days? Who has time these days? I last tried WOL a year ago between two identical Dell laptops. I gave up after nearly two days whilst I still had some hair left.

When it came, i think a lot of us just tinkered with it to learn and just for "fun"
I know i started using it only because it was a new feature. even if i have it today on my printer-server, i can not really say that I'm using it as it is one out of 15 devices.

Nope. I have disabled everything that would wake up the computer. Reason why is because of how advanced today's technology is, that if the slightest thing is going to receive some internet transfer, or some internet check, the whole computer is going to wake up in the middle of the night, just to do something completely unnecessary, and for it to stay on.

My rule is: Only I choose when the computer turns on or off.

I think Wake on LAN would be a good name for a musical group.

And now... for the first time ever in the US, it's... Wake on LAN !!

I'm right there with ya. I hate Wake on LAN for the very same reasons. Judging by the number of intrusion attempts my router reports, the last thing I want is my computer waking up in the middle of the night while some little jerk in mama's basement breaks into my PC when I am not there to see the notifications or notice anything.

Besides, my PC is pretty loud.
