Windows 10 limiting internet speeds to 100 Mbps despite gigabit

My internet connection is 350 Mbps Comcast cable. My computer, an HP Envy 17 j177nr has a gigabit ethernet controller, I am using cat E5 cables (which supports gigabit speeds), my ethernet switch is also a gigabit switch (it says so on the switch itself) yet Windows 10 on this device is STILL limiting my speeds to 100 Mbps.

I tried disconnecting and reconnecting to the internet, I tried unplugging the ethernet ports from ALL plugs and plugging them back in, I tried different cat E5 cables yet my PC is STILL limiting speeds to 100 MBps and NOT 1.0 Gbit.

Does anybody know what the problem could be?

If you would have read my post in its entirety, you would have already known that! It was literally the first thing I said.

What settings have you got for the network card often settings to full duplex will give problems as home routers can't cope

The problem is although cat 5 cables allegedly handle gigabit speeds not all adapters play well with cat 5 and limit speed to 100 mbps.

I had similar issues when linking 2 gigabit adapters with cat5E cables and no matter what I did I could not solve the problem. After a lot of googling I came across a web page written by a comms expert and he simply said "vast majority of speed issues come down to using cat5 cables. Just replace cables with Cat 6 and problem will most likely go away".

I replaced my cat 5E cable with a £3 cat 6 cable and "Boom" - Gigabit speeds.


So obvious thing to try is using Cat 6 cables. Worked for me and others I have discussed this with.
