Can't connect to Wifi without Netgear range extender
I'm currently connecting to the internet with a Netgear range extender, connecting an ethernet cable directly to it. I want to look into connecting without it.

Without the cable or without the Extender? Most times ISPs will provide a Modem [Wired DSL or Cable/Broadband] to get the Internet service then a computer connects to the Modem. Some may provide a Modem/Router combination. I use Wireless DSL, have PoE Modem linked to the dish. Then I can either use the cable from the Modem to one computer or to the Router. I have a 4-port Wireless Router Uplinked to the Modem and an 8-port Switch connected to the Router. I have 6 computers connected via cable, 2 printers and 1 NAS drive. At any one time I'll have 3 or more Notebooks connected via Wireless/Wi-Fi.

It sounds like you want to eliminate the Netgear Range Extender and connect directly to WiFi but your desktop computer does not have a WiFi adapter? If yes, I would suggest something like this:
L-Link 1300Mbps Long Range USB WiFi Adapter for PC
If you have a strong enough signal, it can plug directly into a USB port on the back or front of the computer. Or use can use the USB stand to position it somewhere where it might get a stronger signal.

Hmm...
Never tried it, but I wonder if you can use two range extenders.
That is, if you have Wi-Fi on the computer.
Sort of repeating the repeater.

The computer is Wifi capable, but I have the Internet cut out from time to time.
