Block in hosts works in Edge, not in Firefox

hi, in my hosts file I blocked access to msn.com (I am not happy with that site and it's integrated in Edge it seems).

Now, this block works in Edge, but not in Firefox on the same machine. How would that be possible?

    Regards, Kan

There is a LOT of MSN entries that need blocked. Might want to try this HOSTS file...
Blocking Unwanted Connections with a Hosts File

I've used their HOSTS files for... years.

    Easy way to install...

    1. Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
    2. Rename existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.old
    3. Drag and drop the new HOSTS file in there.
    4. Right click and set the new HOSTS file to Read Only.

You are not required to visit msn, nor have it set as your homepage.

I've always found that Firefox ignores hosts file entries with DOH rollout enabled.

    See this from 2020

Also see these links that were posted in the threads linked in my post above.

HOSTS file works fine for me, in Firefox.
But that may also be in conjunction with one of the :Privacy & Security settings?

    For example...
A ways back I had unrelated problems with CCleaner and something in the Nvidia driver.
I posted on TenForums I think, and someone replied.. just add these to your HOSTS file, which I did and problem went away.

It would work for me too with DOH disabled.

How to Enable or Disable DNS over HTTPS (DoH) in Firefox

So the question for you is do you have DOH enabled and if so what settings are applied here?

I have it enabled, BUT, I get a question mark for "Secure DNS at the test website.
    I use "System Proxy Settings"

I also have the Bitdefender firewall set to stealth mode, which may be what's generating the question mark.
I kind of "like" the fact that it can't detect whether I'm using Secure DNS or not.. Seems "more" secure.

    @Ghot

Never mind. Those hosts file entries that you posted are going to be blocked if accessed by a program like Ccleaner.

What you need to look for is:

Add a website to your hosts file.

    Say:

    Code:
    0.0.0.0 mojeek.com www.mojeek.com
Then disconnect from internet. Reconnect. With Hosts file enabled visit that site in Firefox. If you can connect then hosts file is bypassed.

In other works you need to test the browser and not other installed apps.

I just randomly picked one from the HOSTS file...
    Code:
    0.0.0.0 www.ndparking.com

I don't understand all this as well as you do, but the HOSTS file seems to work for me.
I've been using these MVPS HOSTS files for over a decade, maybe two. They seem to work.

I use NO extensions, and don't get zillions of ads, or land on sites the HOSTS file has listed.
