Peer-Peer and why my ip is the same all the time

Hi. I have something I have never seen, it says peer-peer wth is that? And how do I disable it?
And also my router gives me the same ip, if I remember correctly this was not the case before, and I have not changed anything in the router. When I do ipconfig /release and renew, it still won't change. Is this normal, or what is causing it? Something in the registry? And why does it say preferred? Please see picture.

Here is a definition of Peer-to-peer networking from Microsoft:

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/wi...er-networking-

I typically see this with certain devices such a Printers. It's not something that I would normally be concerned about.

As for you getting the same IP address when releasing / renewing your lease. That is 100% normal behavior. Windows will remember the last IP address that it had and will request that same address again when it tries to renew its lease. Think of it a little like plugging in an external USB drive repeatedly. Windows remembers the details so that it can attempt to offer the same drive letter each time. In this case, it will request the same IP address again. If available, that is what the router will hand it.

I don't think it's Windows that remembers the IP address, it's the router in its routing table based on your MAC address. Swap out the NIC (hardware) and you should get a new IP address from the router. Or change the MAC address in the NIC's properties if provided. That too should give you a new reserved IP address from the router. There's software that'll give you a new MAC address. But messing with that stuff can cause issues.

Me thinks your Node Type should be "hybrid." Running any "privacy/security software?"

I set my computers to use DHCP. My ISP charges more if wanting a Static IP address which would be good if I were to use a server to provide access like a company does.

Peer-Peer usually is a non-server network, mine is that but it's only in my house, also known as a LAN/Local Area Network.

Is it related to peer to peer service? If i disable that it will go away? Im single user and its/pc not in a domain. I dont need peer to peer, for security reasons i read that i can disable such things, remote desktop peer to peer and such. I dont have a server.

How do i fix it so its hybrid? I think it might be related to "peer to peer" service, if i disable that, i think it will change ? (edit, i already did that long time ago) Im single user and its/pc not in a domain. I dont need peer to peer, for security reasons i read that i can disable such things, remote desktop peer to peer and such. I dont have a server. Yeah a lot of security! Norton 360 and malwarebytes running, but i also have disabled a lot of services that security webpages told me to disable if i dont use those things that is related to remote desktop and peer to peer because it can be used to their/hackers advantage with those services running.

When i say a alot of security, i mostly mean "HardeningKitty" from github that i deployed with powershell, amazing thing! Highly recommend it! It has STIG security and other, and with it you can deploy it to check your status, and then you can backup and then deploy hardening so it fixes all of those that are not hardened on your computer. You go into the folder "lists" first and delete those that you dont need, like windows server windows 11 if you are using 10 and so on, then deploy.

It's Windows. Take a look at a packet trace of a Windows system coming online and you will see that it specifically requests the last IP address.

EDIT: It is possible that the router could also hold that info even after the lease is expired (don't know for sure), but Windows definitely requests it. The definitely has to keep track of it while the lease is still valid.

This is what we posted on our site about Peer to Peer !
There are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.
Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect to become infected & malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Sorry i do not, all Malware Removal Specialist just have the OP delete them before we work on the computer ! After we are done they can reinstall the P2P if they chose !

Peer-Peer means that you are not using a server to handle the network. The router can use Sticky Dynamic by remembering MAC ID for IP
