Synology DS408 reachable but no data

    Hi there!

I know it's old. My sweet little Synology DS408 (DSM4). So I switched smb v1 on in W10.

I read some topics about my problem in this forum, but them all say samba 1 is not supported any more. I think the next pictures prove the opposite.

Now I can see the NAS, but I have no access to it.

From a Windows 7 VM, everything works fine and lightning fast. Reading and writing. I hardly see the difference between the NAS and my internal HDD. So the NAS is working fine with Samba v1. Windows 7 is working fine with v1. But Windows 10 says NO! Whatever I try.

Trying to solve this for hours. Starting to get a headache from it... Any help is appreciated.

Edit: I have rebooted, of course :P More than I like.

    Hi,
Try looking at the device in the software "Synology Assistant"

Then set the login details and passwords, as needed. The default Admin login & password, should get you going.

My synology does not require SMB1.0. I would advise against it as it is a security risk.

    On Synology NAS

    Go to Control Panel-->File Services

On the SMB/AFP/NFS tab, select Advanced Settings

Change Maximum SMB protocol to SMB3

Change Minumum SMB protocol to SMB2 with large MTU

    On Windows 10

Go to Control Panel-->Programs-->Turn Windows features on or off

    Uncheck SMB 1.0/CIFS

Check SMB Direct (Windows 10 Pro only I think. Seems enabled by default on Windows 10 Home)

    Restart

Try to connect with Explorer, using IP number. Thereafter you may create a shortcut to NAS and content.

Only the NAS gives me this error.

I can access other computers shares in my network.

Again, the NAS is accessible with W7 without any problem.

So it must be W10's samba v1 support or a setting I can't find. Even after this whole day of experiments.

    Hi,

Did you get the login screen?

Have you set the SMB setting as described above as per this screen?Synology DS408 reachable but no data-nas-smb.jpg

Untick the box for SMB 1.0/CIFS Auto Removal, the other 2 client/server ticked.

    I use a DS212 and DS220
DS212 was set, *SMB 1 to SMB 3
Newer one set, SMB 2 to SMB 3

The reason for the SMB 1 for the older one originally was to see the folders in Windows 10 File Explorer.

However since then I have checked and changed User Accounts, shared folder permissions, updated DSM, and so forth.

    * For some unknown reason the old DS212 (DSM 6.2) is now OK with SMB 1 disabled in Windows 10.

When setting up the New one DS220 following Synology's instructions for Accounts.
It became apparent that the Old one DS212 had been setup wrongly. So I changed it to match the New one.

Go to DSM Control Panel > User > Select User account > Edit > permissions adjust Read/Write permissions for each Folder.

Then go to Shared Folders and individual Folders > Edit and adjust Read/Write permissions.

I'm a million miles from being a network expert, so it is rather a ramble.

Dudes. For real. Why do you all think I start this tread with "I know it's old. My sweet little Synology DS408 (DSM4)"? Because it's not relevant?

If I could upgrade to a newer DSM version, this post would not exist in the first place. And I hope you understand I don't make holes in my network (even if it's not relevant) out of free will. You NEVER downgrade to meet working conditions. I know that.

If I can update the samba package by hand, please let me know how, because I can't find anything in that lane. And without tutor, I'm afraid to brick the thing. Believe me. I know this shit the hard way. Bricked my (very expensive) sat receiver that way, several years ago.

So it must be W10's samba v1 support or a setting I can't find. Even after this whole day of experiments.

An experiment by using IP numbers and access via Explorer or a browser costs you 5 minutes extra.

I get an error from the server. So there is a connection. Looks like you don't notice that. A bit strange, don't you think? How do I get access denied if I don't have a connection? Mr PiKo. So, what will bypassing DNS do? How is this gonna help? Please explain.
