    Cannot connect to the Internet

    Hi

my OS secs are W10 home version, I have done recover to original settings
    as supplied but no updates.

In device manager there is no LAN Ethernet adapter shown, a Wireless adapter id shown and
the Wirteless connect icon is on the task bar but when I select connect and enter the pass code
    it says Cannot Connect.

So I need help with two issues, 1) what happened to the Ethernet adapter in Device Manager
asd 2) why can't I connect on the Wireless connection.

    The signal is strong.

Please let me know where I can start to sort this out.

    Cheers

    Daniel

    Hi,
I have done recover to original settings
    - could you clarify what that procedure was?
    E.g.
    Factory recovery
    Windows refresh
    Something else..
    - what did you do?

Before that could you connect to the internet?

What happens if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking?

If you wished to check your hardware you can try booting your PC from a live boot disk.

Please post the URL for the drivers download page for your MOBO.

    I found this:
    Content

but the only thing there is a BIOS update.

If the drivers for your MOBO are not available, removed from the supplier's site then perhaps your only hope is to search for them or use one of the better driver updater tools (never recommended except where drivers can't be found otherwise.

    Try Snappy Driver Installer
Snappy Driver Installer - Install and Update Drivers for Free

    - won't hurt to try a scan.

This might help: i.e. use the hardware id to try to find a driver.
My UMBus Enumerator is showing up as an unknown device with no driver

Noted you're still using an obscure AV..

    Hi

    Best regards

    Daniel

I have done recover to original settings
    - could you clarify what that procedure was?

It was Factory Recovery built into the PC.

Before that could you connect to the internet?
    No

What happens if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking?
I can’t I get a message that “this app can’t open” “Get started can’t be opened using the “Built-in Administrator account. Sign in with a different account and try again.
    (see attached jpg.)

If you wished to check your hardware you can try booting your PC from a live boot disk.”
What is a “live boot disk” I did do a boot to a recovery disk which is essentially a clone of the internal built in program…. But when it was finished I was able to get onto the Network and Internet.
That lasted for about an hour then dropped out.
I repeated the recovery disk again but this time it did not work, it is showing the Wireless Network icon but when I try to connect (by entering the login code} it comes up “checking network requirements” then shows Unable to connect to this Network.
Please post the URL for the drivers download page for your MOBO.
I do not know how to find out what MOBO I have.

    I found this:
Content it looks like that is the site, but I really have o idea.

I have a driver disk for the PC I tried installing the driver for the Wireless adapter but
But it has not changed anything, in Device Manager it is listed as Wireless LAN 80211c USB2 Network Adapter… Why USB??

This might help: i.e. use the hardware id to try to find a driver.
My UMBus Enumerator is showing up as an unknown device with no driver

Noted you're still using an obscure AV..
Safety Detectives rated it as best

    Hopefully this all helps.

    I appreciate your help

    Thanks.

I do not know how to find out what MOBO I have.
    From your specs:
    Motherboard: Board: MEDION B150H4-EM 2.0

    ????

Then search using the make and model- label on the PC.
    Or use Speccy:
    Cannot connect to the Internet-1.jpg

Before that could you connect to the internet?
    No
I am now therefore assuming you are dealing with a different PC to that in your specs.
-- Has this PC EVER connected to the internet?
    - What is it?
    - Did you perhaps buy it second-hand?

What happens if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking?
I can’t I get a message that “this app can’t open” “Get started can’t be opened using the “Built-in Administrator account. Sign in with a different account and try again.
    (see attached jpg.)
    - Are you signed in with the built-in admin account? If so, why?
    - no jpg attached. To post a screenshot don't attach it do this: (Tutorials available on screenshots)
    Cannot connect to the Internet-screenshot-.png

If you wished to check your hardware you can try booting your PC from a live boot disk.”
What is a “live boot disk”
    Use Google.
    Search for
What is a “live boot disk”?

E.g. Hiren's, Kyhi's, Bob Omb's .... download iso file, create bootable disk from it, boot PC from that.

Once sure you're using a valid account...
    Try Snappy Driver Installer
    Have you done that?

Yes, from the day I bought it untill a few fays ao when firstly the
Ethernet went down, so I started using wireless then that went down and I posted here.
    -
    What is it?
    - Did you perhaps buy it second-hand?""

No this is the same PC as in the specs, I just did not think to look at the specs,
it has been a long time since I entered them.

Are you signed in with the built-in admin account? If so, why?""

No I am signing in with the same name as always, the only change has been my password
which was weak and now is more secure.

I will download and burn a Live Boot Disk

Once sure you're using a valid account...
    Try Snappy Driver Installer
    Have you done that?"

To tell you the truth I am not positive, I have tried so many things, but I think I have
    I will try again.

Another thing I noticed today is that the taskbar clock is showing the wrong time, I set the correct
time bu it did not help.

I will post again when I have done what I have said and redo some things just in case.

What happens if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking?
Do you know how to boot to Safe Mode?
    E.g.
    SHIFT + left click Restart
    - PC will restart..

and navigate via the various blue screens to Safe Mode.

Boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10

At which exact step do you see the error message you mention?

Again, now you know which your PC is,
Please post the URL for the drivers download page for your MOBO.

    Daniel,

Assuming that you are not logged in to the Built-in Admin, you can just close that false warning dialog and not worry about it.
I used to see those fairly often when experimenting with Safe mode but thought they had ceased with Version 1709.

I included a brief note about this in Fix UAC prompt has greyed out or missing Yes button - TenForumsTutorials but I really thought that it was a thing of the past. I assume you are on a later Version.
    Try3 said:
Note about the behaviour of earlier Windows 10 versions In earlier Windows 10 versions but not in Ver 1709, you'd get a false warning that the Get started app could not be opened or that you'd need to get a new app to open ms-get-started. Similarly, if you ever logged in to Safe mode using any other user account, you'd have had a false warning that the Tips app or another app could not be opened "using the Built-In Administrator" even though you were not using it. You could always simply dismiss these warnings out of hand or just ignore them.

Like dalchina, I advise you not to use the Built-in Admin account for anything other than necessary repairs.
    - The Built-in Admin exists for one reason & one reason only, to be enabled by Windows to appear on the Safe mode login screen if Windows cannot detect any other Admin account on the computer. This behaviour is stated in Administrator account status, Safe mode considerations - MSDocs
    - Never be online when logged into the Built-in Admin. You would get no notification if anybody hacked into your computer & started issuing Admin-level commands whilst you were logged into that account.
    - You can check the account you are logged into at any time in a Command prompt window by entering the command Echo %UserName% or, in a PowerShell window, by entering the command $env:UserName If you are logged into the Built-in Admin, the UserName will be reported as Administrator.
    - Use of the Built-in Admin can be avoided altogether by creating your own spare, local, password-protected Admin accounts and using them for any repair work that you cannot run from your normal user account. I have two spares. My ditty - Create two spare local, password-protected Admin accounts [post #2] - TenForums

I appreciate that you have a lot of other things to investigate but you can at least ignore the false warning that you referred to.

    All the best,
    Denis

You're looking for the manufacturer's site, and a page on it supporting your particular PC model.
Google... your PC make/model find or browse to a page where you can search that site for your model.

Manufacturers typically provide drivers per supported O/S as separate lists.
Some will find the right ones automatically for you.

For well-known makes I can usually find the page with e.g. for mine:

    Lenovo t440s driver download
1 click on that page takes me to this (by way of an example only).
laptops and netbooks :: thinkpad t series laptops :: thinkpad t440scontentdetail - Lenovo Support GB

    Safe Mode
I'm still not convinced you're not logged in as the built-in admin (which you shouldn't be).

What do you see if you run
    echo %userprofile%
    from a command prompt?

Do you see what you expect?

Similarly at a command prompt run
wmic useraccount where name='%username%' get sid

    - and post the result.

    Then run
    wmic useraccount get name, sid
    - and post the result.

The first is the sid for the current user, the second, the sid for all.
    The built-in admin's sid ends with 500.

If you're running as a normal user (not the built-in admin) then if UAC is off on your PC? If so, return it to a normal level.
What happens if you try booting to Safe Mode? (Just Safe Mode)
