How can my SanDisk Ultra's Win10 network name be changed?

This question would seem to be answerable by Arris, but they don't seem to have a clue:

When I plug my 950GB SanDisk Ultra thumb drive into my Arris SBG6900-AC cable modem/router, the SanDisk drive appears in Windows, as:
    "Network\ArrisLGW\USBStorage\SanDisk-010189d5392d5e057c3280e72a64c55eb29413578f8ef6bd8b3a2c07bc8cafc"

I can use the SanDisk as a network drive, but the ridiculously long string shown above, eats up 63 precious file path characters!

Arris' router software gives no options for shortening the SanDisk's name. And, if I select it under Windows\Network and try to rename it with Windows, I get, "Folder in Use - the action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it, is open in another program. Close the folder or file, and try again."

I was hoping someone here might have a clue where WHICH entity is finding and applying that 63-character string, and if there's some way of defeating that process, or at least editing those characters out of its network file name (ie, just name it "SanDisk"? Many Thanks if you can help.

    Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, version 21H2 (OS Build 19044.1889)

Yes, I have just found and read your manual - share names are not mentioned at all there.....

When I plug my 950GB SanDisk Ultra thumb drive into my Arris SBG6900-AC cable modem/router, the SanDisk drive appears in Windows, as:
    "Network\ArrisLGW\USBStorage\SanDisk-010189d5392d5e057c3280e72a64c55eb29413578f8ef6bd8b3a2c07bc8cafc"

I feel your pain. The only thing I can suggest is based on my own (different make) router where I also have a USB drive plugged in and shared on the network. My one reads the Volume Label of the drive's partition and uses that as the share name, if there is no Volume Label then it gives it a generic name of 'Shared_Disk'.

I suspect that your drive's partition has no volume label, and your router's default in the absence of one it to call the share whatever it can read as the make/serial number of the drive (so at least you can recognise that it's the right drive). If so, try plugging the drive into your PC and give its partition a name.

Arris' router software gives no options for shortening the SanDisk's name.
My router has no option for setting the share name either. The only way I can set one is through changing the drive's volume label.

That long name is actually a part of the share name, so it's not going to be something that you can change on the Windows side, it would have to be changed on the NAS side, however, I think that you are getting ahead of yourself. Let me explain...

Let's say that you map a drive to that share from Windows. Let's assume you map the drive letter X:. So, as far as windows is concerned, the path to that location is simply "X:". Very short, and not occupying a large number of characters in the path.

    Does that help?

If I was going to place a bet, I would bet that Bree's answer is correct.

Well, we'll have to wait for @Al Nonymous to return and read this thread to find out....

That's an interesting point. I have no idea how it builds the share name. If it uses the volume name that would be a cool thing for me to try to remember.

If that turns out to be correct, that would be a really good catch, Bree.

Well, that's certainly how my current ISP-supplied router does it.

The previous one it replaced named the first usb you plugged into its one usb port as a share named \\<routername>\USB1. If you then unplugged it and plugged in a new one it was allocated the share name USB2 (then USB3, USB4, etc.). Whenever you swapped out USBs and put a previous shared one back in each one would be shared with the name initially allocated to it.

Bree, the SanDisk has one partition and its volume name is "233GB". So your idea, kindly appreciated, appears not to be a solution.

I'm sorry to hear that. Adding the ability to share a usb seems to be very much an afterthought with most router designs and is little documented. All seem to choose too do it differently, and what works on mine may not on another. Sorry I couldn't be of help.....

HseHestedt, the drive mapping sounded great. It gets me right to the desired folder on the SanDisk drive.
But now even more characters (the folder name) are being used up in the path, which is now:

    This PC > foldername \\ARRIS-LGW\USBStorage\SanDisk-010189d5392d5e057c3280e72a64c55eb29413578f8ef6bd8b3a2c07bc8cafc( (Z:)

I guess it's time to replace my 5-year-old gateway router with a newer one that supports WPA3 or WPA2 (AES), so maybe I'll find one that comes with a more friendly USB feature while also 'approved' for compatibility with Xfinity. From past experience, however, it can be very challenging, when shopping, to determine how features of this kind are actually supported and function. I bought this gateway router partly because it had two USB ports. But my hopes of being able to plug in a high capacity thumb drive that would function as a 233 GB network drive didn't exactly work out, due to hidden issues like its strange auto-naming with a long mystery string, and also issues where the drive reports 'no space available' when there's gigabytes of empty space in its partition. Also, I found curious cross-platform (PC/Mac) read/write anomalies that dashed those hopes. Kind of strange, though; it would seem to be a great user-friendly feature for gateway router manufacturers to provide.
