I just want to chime in that I had a similar experience early 2000's when I had Verizon DSL. It was copper and the tech that installed it told me I probably wouldn't get the full 768kbs/128kbs speed advertised because I lived too far. My speeds were about half that but at the time all I used it for was email/surfing the web and Youtube @480p so it was sufficient and much better than dial-up. I did experience occasional disconnects but this was much more reliable than 56k dial-up, my only other choice.
Thankfully Verizon laid fiber in our area so now I have good reliable broadband (200 Mbs) and the only time I have no internet is when we lose power due to storms. Otherwise solid service so far.
I would follow others' advice and seek alternative providers - copper corrodes and at any point between you and your ISP there is some failure. No one wants to pay to maintain copper so pinpointing the failure is highly unlikely.
Well... the new Gateway arrived yesterday. I installed it and so far no freezes on the UVerse. This happened before when we replaced the Gateway back in May or whenever it was. It worked for a while and then the issues came back. In the past, it was a loss of signal and the Uverse would go down. Over the past week, it was freezes on the Uverse every 5 or 10 minutes. Internet, Uverse Phone and streaming TV worked more or less.
@Ghot
Thanks. It stands vertically and the ventilation around it is good.
When I installed the new Gateway I thought about the wire that connects the Gateway to the outlet in the wall. The cable appears to be in good shape. As far as I know its an RJ11 cable. If the freezes start up again, I may replace it. I would think one of the 3 techs that came out would have tested it but you never know.
When the service was activates over 10 years ago, the techs had trouble getting the service working. They replaced all kinds of things and replaced the Gateway. It turned out to be a small connector on the outside of our house. Not sure how that was missed but like so many things, eliminate the obvious!
