    I just want to chime in that I had a similar experience early 2000's when I had Verizon DSL. It was copper and the tech that installed it told me I probably wouldn't get the full 768kbs/128kbs speed advertised because I lived too far. My speeds were about half that but at the time all I used it for was email/surfing the web and Youtube @480p so it was sufficient and much better than dial-up. I did experience occasional disconnects but this was much more reliable than 56k dial-up, my only other choice.

    Thankfully Verizon laid fiber in our area so now I have good reliable broadband (200 Mbs) and the only time I have no internet is when we lose power due to storms. Otherwise solid service so far.

    I would follow others' advice and seek alternative providers - copper corrodes and at any point between you and your ISP there is some failure. No one wants to pay to maintain copper so pinpointing the failure is highly unlikely.

    tomdsr,

    Thanks for the reply.

    Yes, my Uverse comes in on copper and then terminates in my house via my phone jack. The RJ11 connects to the back of my Residential Gateway. I like your idea about testing at the NID. The second technician ran the test as they wanted to make sure there were no issues with the wiring in my house.

    All of the techs have commented that the signal coming into the house is not great. My guess is the issue is outside of our house. There may be no fix to this other than to change providers. ATT is not investing in copper infrastructure anymore and see the network as a nuisance. I have some inside information on this subject.

    Thanks, Bill
    Ya, it may be tough for them to find a good pair, their lack of upkeep on the copper is bad

    If Verizon is available... grab it. Verizon FIOS is awesome.

    Well... the new Gateway arrived yesterday. I installed it and so far no freezes on the UVerse. This happened before when we replaced the Gateway back in May or whenever it was. It worked for a while and then the issues came back. In the past, it was a loss of signal and the Uverse would go down. Over the past week, it was freezes on the Uverse every 5 or 10 minutes. Internet, Uverse Phone and streaming TV worked more or less.

    Back when I had Verizon DSL, one of the models of modems they had, got hot.
    If I left it horizontal, it would heat up and cause problems.

    But when I stood it up vertically, so the air could get to it, the problems went away.

    @Ghot

    Thanks. It stands vertically and the ventilation around it is good.

    When I installed the new Gateway I thought about the wire that connects the Gateway to the outlet in the wall. The cable appears to be in good shape. As far as I know its an RJ11 cable. If the freezes start up again, I may replace it. I would think one of the 3 techs that came out would have tested it but you never know.

    When the service was activates over 10 years ago, the techs had trouble getting the service working. They replaced all kinds of things and replaced the Gateway. It turned out to be a small connector on the outside of our house. Not sure how that was missed but like so many things, eliminate the obvious!

    Yeah, that's the thing with cables. Sometimes they can have an intermittent problem.
