    Connect TV to Internet

    Build 19044 1706

I presently have a Sony KLV-S19A10 television set (I have the user manual) and would like to keep my cable provider but also want to connect to the internet (directly or through my computer) so I can watch my amazon prime movies. I need someone to tell how to do it with my existing equipment or do I need a newer Smart TV to make this work. I’m 77 years old and am not technically savvy so I hope someone can connect with my computer and walk me through the setup.

I don't know where your computer and TV are located, but you can always just hook the computer to the TV with an HDMI cable.

Then you can watch anything that your computer can display, on your TV.

It's the only way with this Model.

If your computer is a bit far from your TV, you can get a mini Wireless Controller like this.

And use that to control your computer while using the TV... They're pretty nice up to 10 meters distance. And they use standards 3A Batteries, Once you get used to the touch pad they're perfect.

    John,

    Corrected after Ghot's post [below].

You can connect them with a standard HDMI cable.
So you'll need to buy one that's long enough to reach between them and be tucked up out of the way so you don't trip over the cable every day - mine are only six feet apart but there's a walkway in between so I have to use a 21 foot cable that I run it around the wall and above the door.
    BUT
Please note the warning on page 26 of your manual about use of the HDMI input. Unless someday else knows better, I'd expect that you could just go ahead anyway but there would be a risk involved.

You might find switching between the TV and computer screens confusing at first but I do it all the time and I found that I got used to it pretty quickly.

    - When you first connect the HDMI cable to the, it might automatically switch to displaying on both the computer & the TV or it might display only on the TV so the computer screen goes blank.
    - When you connect them using an HDMI cable, you need to tell your TV to use its HDMI input [this will be in its manual].
    - Once you can see the display on one of them, press WinKey-P and play with the up-down arrow keys to see the choices you can make [PC-only, PC duplicated on TV, PC extended onto TV, TV-only]. You can play as much as you like because you cannot do any harm.
    - If you get confused at any point, you can return the display to the computer screen [even if you have to operate 'blind'] by pressing:
WinKey-P {The Windows key and the P key pressed at the same time},
    then the Home key,
    then the Return key.
[Don't rush these - each command takes a moment to respond]
    - If you find shortcuts more convenient in practice [I do], you can set up shortcuts for each of the choices I mentioned above [PC-only, PC duplicated on TV, PC extended onto TV, TV-only] so you don't need to use the keyboard all the time.
    - - See DisplaySwitch shortcuts (my post #3) - TenForums
    - - I have attached a zipped copy of these shortcuts for you to download in case you are not sure how to make them
    1 PC display
    2 Duplicate displays
    3 Extend display
    4 External display
Display shortcuts.zip - just extract ("unzip") the contents using Unzip Files - TenForumsTutorials

You could also just use your mouse to control the computer whilst connected to the TV when watching computer movies etc on the TV.
I started out using a USB mouse with a USB extension cable but now use a Bluetooth mouse instead.

    Best of luck,

    Mike,
    Thanks for correcting me.
The diagrams I had found seemed to illustrate left, back, right connection panels but actually showed left, back, left so I missed the HDMI input entirely.

    All the best,

    Mike,

What do you make of the page 26 warning about not using HDMI with a computer?

I have no idea. It's a really weird manual.
    I see a spot called PC In...but no connector(s)...
Page 14 has some info about PC In.

    ALL the manuals...

At this link, they have a Questions and Answers tab, which led me to here...

And there's a "BRAVIA TV Connection Guide", and there's a Sony Support chat bot.

    John,

Page 28 of your manual says you ought to use a special computer-TV connector cable that was included with the TV when you bought it.
    - The connector is on the back of the TV and you'll also need to string an audio cable between the PC & TV as well because that special connector seems to be for video signals only.

Personally, I'd ignore all that and connect using HDMI instead [page 26 of your manual].
Sony also seem to agree that an HDMI connection is alright after all - see connecting a Personal Computer - Sony

To switch between normal TV display & computer display, you will probably use the Display ["1"] button at the top of the remote [illustrated on page 34].
Perhaps you can also use the DVD/VCR button ["1"] about halfway down the remote control.
I find the instructions for other equipment on page 34 baffling. With any luck, they might be irrelevant since you'll be controlling your computer yourself and not with the Sony remote control.

I also have a Sony TV. I also found its instructions inadequate. And retuning & assigning particular channel numbers to TV channels [BBC1 on channel/button 1, BBC2 on channel/button 2, etc] takes over an hour compared to 5 minutes for other brands. I will never buy any Sony equipment again.

John - I'm worried that our responses are baffling you. I'm not sure what to do about that.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

The only thing I can think to add is that at least on my really old TV... I can use the remote to choose whatever input I want.
So if you do use HDMI... you should be able to choose that input, with your remote.

    Hi there
    @johncee2000

Another possibility is to connect an Amazon Firestick to the HDMI input.

It's about 35 EUR / USD and is already pre-programmed for amazon prime and netflix. Plus depending on where you are you can also connect to std terrestial channels e.g in UK services like ITV HUB, ALL 4, CH 5 and BBC iPlayer without needing a TV antenna if your internet is decent enough.

In USA / other regions the std broadcast channels should be available via Internet too, plus in the USA there's zillions of free tv channels in STD definition (you have to pay for HD, but SD is free) including movie channels such as HBO, Cinemax, TNT, etc available at usgotv -- just use the built in browser on the firestick to go to that URL.

A cheap manual HDMI switchbox would also be an easy option to switch between the std HDMI cable and the firestick when required if as I suspect the TV only has 1 HDMI slot as its quite an old model.

    Cheers
